Exactly! This is the real theme, not that they are mean spirited but that when they do something good, they often receive a kick in the pants (additional example. George finally is honest with his girlfriend after saving the whale, and she leaves him stranded at the beach. I think the series is poking fun at society more than at the characters and that's why so many people identify with these characters. Its not so much that the characters are "neurotic New Yorkers" but that the entire society is screwed up.
