Interestingly, I had felt that the quality of the cartoons had declined somewhat recently, and had gotten the sense that even their "topical" ones were past their "best by" date by the time they got through the selection process. So with this thread in mind I stol^H^H^H borrowed my friend's copy from October 4 and was fairly pleasantly surprised... some were laugh-out-loud funny.

My feeling that *all* their "topical" cartoons were irredeemably stale by newsstand date was challenged by the very first one in this issue - as a couple leave a cocktail party, Missus -- *clearly* annoyed -- says to Mister, "You were the only one there who didn't know how Kerry can pull it off!" Unfortunately, the rest reinforced that "slightly dated" feeling - cartoons about "private contractors", "life coaches", "family values" and "omega-3 fatty acids". For a weekly magazine, these felt very two-months-ago at best.

My sense is that if they want to continue to have the cartoons considered a *key* part of the magazine, or a *key* reason people shell out to buy it -- and their ongoing publication of collections (lawyer cartoons, cat cartoons, golf cartoons, now the entire collection) suggest they see them as a prestige part of the publication -- they should increase their cartoon editorial staff to hasten the editorial process and allow the 'toons to be much more timely. And maybe include more in each issue.
