Viewers discover J. Peterman is a real company and discuss how Seinfeld gets permission to feature it on the show, with consensus that the company appreciates the publicity.
I recently located a WebSite for J. Peterman stores, and thinking it had to be a joke, put my name down for a catalogue. Well, sure enough, 2 months later (I live in Australia), the spring catalogue arrived and the clothes had names and write-up's just like on the show!!!
Is it common knowledge in the US that J. Peterman stores are real - they only seem to operate in Kentucky and if the answer is yes, how does Seinfeld get away taking them off without incurring a law suit?

By phoning the company and asking if they can. They have done this with many of the products that they mention on the show. Companies seem to appreciate the publicity and raised visibility.

Yup, it's real, and I work there. We've been in business 10 years, and I've been there for eight of them. We have stores in Lexington, KY, Chattanooga, TN, and Manchester, VT. In a couple of months we're opening one in Camarillo, CA, and many more are following next year. The real J.P. finds his portrayal on the show amusing and is happy to take the publicity.

No, although that's a large chunk of our customer base. Peterman's from Upstate, and our Creative Director and main artist live in the city and work out of their homes. It always cracks me up when I see the offices the company has on the show. Our offices in Lexington are a looong way from that! ;)
Not really. He's actually kind of reserved, although he definitely has that adventurer spirit, which is lucky for me since I wouldn't have this job if he hadn't taken some chances. The character of "J. Peterman" as we know it from the catalog is an invention of our creative director in NYC, and Seinfeld's writers have done a great job parodying his essence.

There is a book out...forget the name...looks like the J. Peterman catalogue, but it is a parody of same. Anyone heard of this? It was featured in the Gannet Newspapers Living section about a month or so ago. Looked quite amusing. The Hermit
