Woody Allen and George Costanza

My apologies! I got confused about the name of the person who posted this in the "George's best line" thread. There were too many quotes! But here's one observation: I think a lot of what George says could be Woody Allen quotes. The fact that they are physically different and also the setting and the frame of the stories are different makes their similarities less obvious. For Example I remember a Woody Allen quote that goes approx. like this: "I would never want to become a member of a club that would be willing to accept me as a member." And I think he was metphorically referring to his relation to women. Thissounds a lot like George's attitude. There are many psychological features that most Woody Allen characters (played by him) and George have in common: Insecurity about their looks, paranoia, disturbed relation to women, dishonesty to a certain degree ...

Actually, I read someplace that when Jason Alexander auditioned for George he read the part as a Woody Allen impression. Guess it worked for him!

Not only that, but he continued to play the part as a Woody Allen takeoff throughout the first season. Watch any of the early episodes and you'll see this.

Interestingly, Michael Richards said he originally played Kramer as sort of a takeoff on Reverend Jim, from Taxi. Both characters -- Kramer and George -- took several shows to evolve.
