NBC: The Tradition Continues

Another knee-jerk reation by the suits at NBC. Conan O'Brien now joins SNL, Seinfeld and Law & Order (or was it Homicide?) on the list of shows that (1) aired material that offended some group, (2) recieved complaints by said group, and (c) had NBC immediately respond by banning the episode from repeats.

'Late Night' Asked To Apologize For Racial Slur Wed, Jul 18, 2001 01:38 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - An apology was demanded from NBC's "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" after a comedian on the show used a racial epithet against Asians.

According to AP, the Media Action Network for Asian Americans called for an apology from comedian Sarah Silverman for using the term "chinks" during a taping on July 11. In a conversation with O'Brien, Silverman lamented over being called for jury duty. ``My friend is like, why don't you write something inappropriate on the form, like 'I hate chinks,''' Silverman said. But she didn't want people to think she was racist, she said, so ``I just filled out the form and I wrote 'I love chinks' - and who doesn't?''

Media Action Network for Asian Americans president Guy Aoki said, ``There is no excuse for something like this to have made the air. The term is the most offensive possible reference to a person of Chinese descent."

A spokesman for O'Brien's show had no immediate comment. A call to Silverman's manager, Geoff Cheddy, was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Actually I wouldn't have thought so. If I had to verbalise why I feel that way I'd say it has something to do with MCB being a broadside against a government to which a large portion of the US and (more importantly) *Chinese* populace have an understandable objection, whereas "Chinks" is personally demeaning to them on the basis of their race. I can easily imagine a Chinese-American being easily able to laugh off the suggestion that he's a communist. But about the other I'd have my doubts. Just as I think you could stick any epithet in the middle of "muthaf*ckin *** bastard" referring to the govt of the country of origin of any African-American and in no way would he find that as offensive as calling him n*****.

It could be argued that rather than "guts," NBC has a Standards and Practices department that falls down on the job fairly often and a PR/Legal deptartment that folds like a cheap card table at the first sign of protest.

(NBC has vowed to never again air the SNL that was hosted by Andrew Dice Clay...as if they didn't know what they were getting when they booked him for the show.)

As abhorrent as I find these despicable groups I also believe in free speech and that they should have a right to say what they believe. As I do of them.

I can't remember who said it, but the gist was: I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. There is currently a bill before parliament in NZ with the intention of stopping political campaining a couple of weeks out from election time. You guys in the States are lucky there is still the illusion of free speech, at least.

But to me, there should be a line drawn......I know that not everyone feels that way. For example, I don't believe that they (the above groups), in particular, should be allowed to say what they're saying, simply because it has been seen where this leads. I don't see how any good at all could come from what they're saying. Also, if you believe in allowing all speech, then would you be willing to let anyone say anything they want, about you ? Even if it's slanderous ? What if it's a lie ? What if it's an idea which can't be lie (because it's an idea), but can lead to death of innocent people ?
