Will Seinfeld suffer with it's new found popularity.

Just a thought - do you think Seinfeld will start to lose it's uniqueness now that it is expected to be the leader of the Thursday-night powerhouse? I mean, you wonder if the NBC big-wigs will be able to leave the show alone, or if they'll force them to put in the standard sit-com fare.

Well, I dunno, I think Seinfeld will always have its own breed of fans, just because half of the "Home Improvement" type crowd won't get half of the jokes since Jerry doesn't grunt after to let them know when to laugh. Let's just hope the new popularity will keep it going forever and ever and ever. Plus, look at how popular Letterman is, and the show is still a marvel of television, second to none in quality. long live dave, long live dave!

Well, yeah, but it wasn't NBC's fault. Bochco's ego is what destroyed this show.

Again, mostly ego problems within the production company, not the network, IMHO.

Yeah, but moonlighting had what I consider some of the best TV comedy moments I've ever seen, even better than Seinfeld. Somebody asked about a moonlighting group. I don't see one in my 2230 line .newsrc. Too bad. And I really wish I got moonlighting in reruns here. I didn't really start watching until its 2nd year or so.

How many people remember the episode during the writer's strike?: At the end of the show, there was still about 5min left before the hour was up, so the cast came out onto a stage, and they cajoled/threatened/convinced the weirdo assistant guy with the stubbly beard (whose name I do not know) into lip-synching to "Woolly Bully". I thought I was going to die! I still think of that scene every time I hear the song.

And their take-off of "Taming of the Shrew" was also great.

(Sorry, this is my 2nd barely-periferally-related-to-seinfeld posting in as many weeks.)

OBSeinfeld. You know, the more I watch the show, the more I agree with the George haters. At first, he was OK and I kinda liked him. But his character just keeps getting more and more stupid and tiring.

IMnsHO, it's already begun. Kramer's (formerly occasional) spectatular entrances have (for me) already lost their freshness and become predictable. The audience applause at his entrances (and nobody else's) is also getting a little thin (yes, I know the tradition, but it's just so...so....so Carol Burnettish). Sigh.

At least the humor is still Very High Class, and they still rely on us to catch it.

But that's the thing, I don't think "we" are carrying the show anyomre. I mean, when it was on at 8 on Wednesdays, THEN we were carrying it. Only true Seinfeld fans were watching, the others were watching H.I. Then it was somewhere in the middle of the ratings. Enough to keep it on, but nothing spectacular. Now that it's on after Cheers, and BEATING it, then what I think is happening is that they got almost all the Cheers people to watch Seinfeld - AND they got us. Now, I don't put much faith in Joe Six-Pack and Jane Lunchpail, and when I look at the ratings other shows I like there are only a few that catch on with the general public, and the reason it DOES catch on with the general public is probably something other than what draws us afficianados. In other words, the people that are watching Seinfeld now aren't the same people that were watching it before. Now that Seinfeld HAS the great ratings, it is going to be expected to carry NBC's comatose Thursday night. And to do this without a great lead-in from the "Last 10 Episodes of Cheers", the NBC heads may be tempted to tinker the show to make it more "populist".

But we were never carrying it. Unless you have a Nielson box in your house, what you watch doesn't matter. It is true that the "average" person is more likely to watch H.I. than Seinfeld (although I like to think that those that watch Seinfeld are above avarage). The "average" person is also likely to watch Cheers. If Seinfeld and H.I. were on the same network, and H.I. went on first, Seinfeld's ratings would be similar to its ratings after Cheers.

Bottom line, what we watch doesn't matter. Just like all the thousands of people that went to the LA Quantum Leap convention. NBC probably knew of less than 1% of those people.
