SEINFELD SHOULD HANG IT UP!

I'm a regular Seinfeld watcher and I think that in its first few seasons, the show was brilliant. It used to make me laugh out loud. Lately however, it has become repetitive and stale. Every episode invariably seems to revolve around dating, being single, and the shallowness of the characters. I don't particularly care for the way they make men out to be such superficial jerks. Seinfeld himself always has a sports metaphor for every aspect of dating.

Jerry to George: So she's an eligible receiver? Jerry to Elaine: What's the point of dating without games? How do you know if you're winning? Jerry to George: Maybe she called an audible. She stepped up to the line of scrimmage, read the defense, didn't like what she saw, then changed the play.

What a dork! He trivializes dating as if it were a big competition, a big game (which it is but that's beside the point). I think Seinfeld should take the money from his AMEX commercials and hang it up once and for all. That happens to many shows (The Simpsons, Married with Children), they're funny but they stay on too long. I don't even know why I still watch the show. I guess it's because ther's nothing else to watch on Thursday night. Oh well, Seinfeld still beats Friends anyday.

Um, dude...if you think Seinfeld is giving dateing advice or something, you need to get out more often. Its a comedy..you know, one of those things that trys to make you laugh...therefore, they must play off of stereotypes that most people either believe or would have experienced and this connection is where the humor comes from....Also, I think that this season has been awesome and if you are a regular reader of this newsgroup, you would notice that many people agree....come one, how many people have you called recently that either have George singing on their answering machine or some kind of reference to that....I hope he keeps going until he is bored with it.... I, personally, get a kick out of the sports references. Dating IS a game. Jerry's writers found an ingenious way to explain the same silly shit we all (I mean, all daters) have to experience.

She didn't like the look of the defense, so she called an audible.

This is brilliant. I cannot think of a better way to explain that scene. The waitress was interested in George until he started talking about manure. At this point, she mentioned the 'boyfriend'. This is just like a football quarterback who gets to the line of scrimmage, wants to throw a pass, sees the defense in a blitz formation, then audibles a fullback sweep and picks up 10 yards. He turned nothing into something.

In the same way, the waitress decided that someone who talks about manure might not be the best choice for a date, so she casually mentions her boyfriend. This effectively gets her out of the possible relationship, so she's a winner (ie. she picked up the 10 yards.)

As far as the show changing, well, check the earlier episodes. They're mostly about dating. That's what the show is about. Notice Jerry with a new girlfriend every week? This is not something new. They've been doing it for years.

My suggestion is that over the past 8 years or so, your own tastes may have changed. Maybe you just got out of a failed relationship and some of the things you used to find humorous no longer appear that way.

Well if u think that's why I have this attitude now, then you're just SIMPLE (sorry). I mean that's one thing women dislike very much in men. They turn everything into a big competition with a win/lose outcome. Also, I do notice that Jerry does have a different girlfriend every week. I also notice that George always gets women, even though he's short, fat, bald, and stupid. I don't know about you but life is just not like that for anyone I know.

I suppose now you'll say that it's not supposed to be real, that it's just a TV show. Maybe so, but half the reason why Seinfeld is so popular is because it's supposed to be about "everyday life" as they say.

I am afraid I agree with you, Troya Black. Seinfeld is getting stale. This may partly be due to the loss of one of the writers. I would go so far as to say that this is the whole reason. It has not gotten quite as bad as the once amusing Married with Children (which should have been cancelled in 1993), but if NBC doesn't do a mercy killing soon, it will end up being an embarrassment.

I've been a viewer from episode 1 (though I missed a lot of season 6 the first time around due to school) and I must say that season 8 is far superior to the last two seasons (6 and 7). From George's answering machine message to Jerry's bounced check to the Susan/Suzie foundation thing, the quality of this season is consistantly high. Sure, it's no season 4 (the glory season, which starts airing in syndication on the 17th), but nothing since has been quite so tight but loose. IMHO, things are looking way up from Season 6, when we got the dreadful Kramer overexposure (the assman, Cosmo, etc) and even from last season when George was just a little too tied up with Susan...

Just my opinion. I know what you mean about MWC (I say Fox should have killed it in '92) but I don't see Seinfeld running out of steam any time soon.

I must admit without Larry David they should have hung it up, but then again, there have been MANY classics this season despite the few bad points. I just think that they shouldn't keep trying to top Susan's death as far as plot twists go. get normal. Oh well, unsteady Seinfeld is better than no Seinfeld at all.

Am I the only one who likes Season 6? I happen to enjoy a lot of the episodes from that year - The Switch, The Label Maker, The Pledge Drive, The Race, The Jimmy, The Fusilli Jerry, The Chinese Woman - and I consider it one of my favorites.

There were a few season six episodes that were really good, but for the most part I consider it the worst season. The episodes just seemed too sloppy, like they had been written in a day. It started with the awful Miss America episode and ended with the even more horrible Bette Midler episode (can't remember episode names right now). Not that it wasn't funny - it just wasn't as funny as the other seasons (like the current one).

But it was no where near as bad as the early batch of episodes from season 5. Shudder...

No you are not the only one! (I think that phrase deserved an exclamation point and I am very carefull about using exclamation points). The switch and the race are probably my two favorite shows. But my favorite season is still the one in which they made the pilot. Because the shows from that season were more consistently funny. I choose not to run because I need stamina, I am currently involved in a menage a trois.

I dont know if anyone has told you this yet, but there are people who still like Seinfeld! SO just turn your TV off if you dont want to watch it! No one is forcing you.

I've got to say I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the current season. Down here in Australia we're about 5 or 6 episodes into the season and I was expecting it to be lacklustre after many of the comments on this NG. The episodes have been great - better IMHO than last season (which I wasn't too fond of). Here's hoping they keep up the quality and go on for another season. :>
