Fans debate whether "The Rye" episode is as great as critics claim, with mixed opinions on whether the ending and subplots justify its acclaim.
OK I guess I'm one of them. I don't understand what it was that happened at the end that made it so wonderful. I thought the episode was ok, but was certainly not my favorite, nor would I declare it to be quintessential. Could you elaborate on this final segment?

Kristen, what did you not understand, or what did you miss?
George and Susan's parents got together for dinner, and the Costanzas brought a Marble Rye. Susan's parents forgot to put it out, so Mr. Costanza stole the rye out of anger.
George was embarassed by this and decided to sneak a new rye in (a couple of days late even) and put it in the kitchen, hoping that Susan's parents would assume it was there all along.
He had gotten Susan's parent's out of the house by having Kramer take them for a Handsome cab ride, but the horse had gas (per Kramer feeding it Beefarino) and they came back early, before Jerry had a chance to get the Rye to George, so Jerry adn Kramer were trying to through the Rye through the window (which is a couple of floors up) and couldn't through it high enough, so George got a fishing pole and reeled the rye on up, but alas, he was caught.
I think what the original poster was aluding to and what Kristen missed, is the Elaine subplot with here musician boyfriend. When the recent TV guide article called "The Rye" one of the ten greatest Seinfeld episodes ever, the article writer had to have in mind all the sub-plots and one of the funniest tags (at the ending credits) ever for a sitcom. Wheter that was a live audiance or "sweeten canned" laughter, I don't remember a bigger response that this since Kramer said "Not that there is anything wrong with that" at the end of "The Outing"

I agree with Kristen, I don't really think that episode was all that funny. I was hoping there was something I missed, but from your explanation I can see that I didn't miss anything. It just wasn't funny to me. Everyone entitled to their opinion, though. I probably got a real laugh out of an episode that someone else didn't think was funny (like the Chinese Restaurant and the Parking Garage).

Well, I have to follow-up my own post. Before I watched "The Rye" this week, I didn't realize that it included that stuff about Elaine's musician -- that stuff did make me laugh.

Question: How could a Romanian gymnast have competed in the '84 Olympics which were boycotted by the Soviet bloc countries?

No, you guys have short memories. Romania DID participate in the 84 Olympics in LA. They were remarked upon several times by the American commentators that this was one of the few "bloc" countries that actually participated. In fact, they were the Americans main competition in women's gymnastics.
