Tony Shalhoub has made a wonderful character out of Monk, the phobia- ridden detective. But it's interesting that he wasn't the first choice of the producers. They wanted Michael Richards to play Monk.

That doesn't sound like it would have worked well, probably just because Tony Shalhoub has made the role his. Also, Michael Richards did have a show where he was a detective a while back, but it promptly failed.
Shaloub is a much better actor and can often downplay the character a bit - (he should do it more). Richards would have been over-the-top. Too distracting from the plot line of the mystery.
