5 best sitcoms

I think the 5 best sitcoms of all time are:

1: M*A*S*H* 2: Seinfeld 3: All in the Family 4: Taxi 5: The Simpsons.

Keep in mind I've only watched 3 and 4 in occasional reruns and a few reunion/retrospective shows.

Well I hasten to mention what I feel are the 5 best sitcoms of all time and would like your opinion since I believe SEINFELD is one of them. The other 4, based on writing, directing and ensemble acting are DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, ALL IN THE FAMILY, MASH, I LOVE LUCY. These are not necessarily my favorite-as I would put CAR 54 in that category-but think about it and would sincerely like all of your opinions.

I would have to include Cheers in my top 5.

My five: 1) M*A*S*H - Can't get enough of that show! 2) The Simpsons - The "I Didn't Do It" boy is my favorite episode 3) Seinfeld - The funky bass, the funky Kramer, what's not to like? 4) WKRP in Cincinnati - Ah, I miss my old friend 5) Frasier - I know it's a spin-off, but I just like it better!

In no particular order:

"The Bill Cosby Show" (not the one he did in the 80's, the 70's show where he played Chet Kincaid, the hip high school basketball coach)

"The Simpsons"

"Seinfeld"

"The Odd Couple"

"Barney Miller"

"Taxi"

The rest are just terrible, please someone cancel Friends

Has anyone else noticed that the Friends-O-Mania from last year has been subsiding some? I haven't seen *quite* as many articles and things about it, and have heard people say it's not as good this season. I myself like it a lot less ... I don't know if the show has actually changed or if I'm just so tired of them all sleeping around.

Here are my choices for the best sitcoms (in no particular order):

-Seinfeld (but only up to the end of the 5th season) -Friends -Mad About You -Pig Sty (it was a crime that it was cancelled) -The Larry Sanders Show

Some very honorable mentions:

-Frasier -Two Something/New York Daze -Three's Company (how could you all forget this one?) -Newsradio -Ned and Stacy

Not bad, although I think Friends is cut below the greats - but hey, purely my opinion.

For me:

• Simpsons (OK, not exactly a sitcom but close!)
• Frasier
• Mad About You
• Second Thoughts (A british Sitcom)

Problem with naming older ones is that they were hilarious back then, but cultural change doesn't make them as hilarious as before. e.g. Three's Company (who really cares if a guy lives with 2 gals nowadays; it's a common arrangement for people in late 20's); Cheers is also so "80is" I don't watch it at all (most probably still hilarious, but I avoid it).

The Andy Griffith Show The Dick Van Dyke Show The Simpsons The Mary Tyler Moore Show The Bob Newhart Show or Newhart -- take your pick

Apparently, some of the posters on this topic aren't OLD enough to cite the Top 5 sitcoms EVER. Seinfeld is funny, as are many others worthy of honorable mention: M*A*S*H, WKRP, Cheers, Police Squad (all six episodes), Frasier, Hogan's Heros,

Oddly enough, sometimes I miss Seinfeld and Fraiser. I _never_ miss Friends, though I think that the writing, format and acting is better on the other two shows. I mean, Friends is great, but almost nothing can compare to Seinfeld. Fraiser and Friends are much closer together quality-wise, but I think that the Doctor edges out the twentysomethings.

It almost like, the other shows may be better, but I have a loyalty to Friends that I don't have with the other two. ( I actually just wrote "tow" instead of "two." I need to get off the Friends listserv. :-])

Gads--when I start using the word "loyalty" and <insert anything to to with the idiot box here> in the same sentance, it's time to get a new hobby. Or a girlfriend or something.

Ok, I'm only going to mention 2 great sitcoms, but both are clearly ancestors of "Seinfeld."

First, "The Jack Benny Show" was the original show about nothing with Jack Benny, Mary Wilson, Dennis Day, & Rochester Anderson comprising a great ensemble cast of actors. Like "Seinfeld," the Benny show recounted Jack's mishaps & encounters with everyday life. Jack Benny was also as bad an actor as Jerry Seinfeld and mugged the camera even more than Seinfeld himself.

Second, "The Honeymooners" gave us Kosmo Kramer's direct evolutionary antecedent, the "Piltdown Man" of screwball neighbors, Edward Norton. Art Carney perfected the art of physcial comedy (particularly his entrances through doors into apartments) before Michael Richards was even born. Richards clearly has studied Carney and has learned a lot of his schtick from watching reruns of the Honeymooners.

BTW: Lighten up on criticism of Seinfeld. It is just TV, ya' know.

I'll never figure out why people like M*A*S*H so much. It's just not that funny. However, since this is my first post to this newsgroup, I will refrain from flame-baiting. Here are my five best (not favorite):
