Just to make a minor point again before I'm either proven right or proven wrong, there has been no real evidence that Nancy Gribble is having an adulterous affair with John Redcorn on _King of the Hill_ so far.

There has been innuendo galore, to be sure, beginning with Joseph's first appearance in the series premiere. But every bit of it to date could have alternative explanations.

During the same two-year period, there have been at least two shows whose theme has been about jumping to unwarranted conclusions, and in each case there was actual evidence. In the pilot Bobby actually had a black eye, which led some people to conclude that Hank had hit him. In the episode of the missing dogs, the dogs were actually missing for the period that people suspected that they had been eating dog meat.

Mike Judge also has a certain history of poking fun at his audience, as the Beavis and Butt-Head years can demonstrate.

Titles of episodes and TV Guide blurbs are little help beforehand in determining what is going to happen, as "Death of a Propane Salesman" might confirm.

Now detailed analysis of an animated series is usually futile. As an example of that, at every Army post I was ever assigned to, every barber I ever knew about was a civilian employee of a barber concessionaire. I had never even heard of a military barber before _King of the Hill_ came along. But it turns out that *in the show* Bill Dauterive is a military barber.

That said, it was stated in the pilot that Nancy Gribble had been seeing her healer for twelve years for her migraine headaches. But Joseph would seem to be about Bobby's age, which was about twelve at the time (and perhaps eternally), though my guess from various remarks would have been that he is up to a year older than Bobby. The standard pregnancy takes nine months or so before the birth. That doesn't leave much time if any for a courtship.

Much is made of the fact that Joseph is drawn to look a little like John Redcorn. It could be that Joseph is adopted (as Dale once hinted). It could be that Joseph is the son of an earlier marriage of either Dale or Nancy. It could be that there was a mix-up at the fertility clinic (and let's not forget that Bobby Hill looks almost exactly like the young Bill Dauterive in the flashbacks, not to mention having similar mental acuity).

Much is made of the fact that Nancy Gribble was dancing with John Redcorn during one episode, but during the same number Peggy Hill was dancing with Bill Dauterive while Dale Gribble and Hank Hill were looking for a new boyfriend for Luanne.

What else. Much is made of the fact that Hank once went to the Gribble house looking for John Redcorn. Heck, he's got a big car, and he parks it right there. Why was he there? He is a healer, and he said he was giving a therapeutic massage. Were conventional physicians under suspicion back in the days when they made house calls?

The upshot is that however enjoyable the cheap laughs may be, on a family show an adulterous affair between a man who holds at least his heritage sacred and a woman whose husband loves and trusts her is just not funny. Sure, there may be a little giggle about a conspiracy nut missing out on a conspiracy, but the same nut was willing to sacrifice his life to save Bobby Hill in the fire-ant episode, and deserves a little respect from the creators, if not from the audience.

So maybe I'm wrong. But all the other humor on the show has had a little subtlety to it, so I'm keeping the faith until Tuesday (or longer, if it's pre-empted by baseball).

That'll work. Another explanation could be that Nancy and John were having an affair for much longer than 12 years, but 12 years ago were "caught" by Dale, and Nancy explained it off as seeing a healer, and Dale bought it.
