I saw an episode last night in which Hank said that he had known Dale since the first grade (?? The system we have in the UK is slightly different to what you have in the US), but in another episode (possibly the millenium bug one), I'm sure Hank said that they'd known each other since second grade. Was I hearing correctly?

Could be. As an exercise, though, try keeping track of who lives on the garage side of the Hill house. Continuity isn't exactly their strong point.
