So, we've got two seasons' worth of KING OF THE HILL DVD sets... what do we think of the features? (The episodes are great of course, but they're known quantities.)
I'm really into the deleted scenes, especially the animatic-only scenes. Highlights from the deleted scenes include: - Mr. Strickland's first lewd reference to Luanne ("Hey, Hank, how do you like the swing on that gal's back porch?") - Cotton and Little Hank's trip to Canada to shoot draft dodgers (and the ensuing argument over whether back-bacon is really bacon) - The whole "K sounds" runner in "Traffic Jam," which was presumably cut when they decided not to refer directly to the KKK (instead substituting the more generic "White Nationalist Brotherhood").
I also like the making-of documentary on the first set, and the how-to-draw the characters documentary on the second set (with comments about what makes each character interesting to draw).
The in-character commentaries are generally better on the second set because the actors seem to feel more free to break out of character and talk about stuff like who does a particular voice... I like the bit in the "Husky Bobby" commentary where a little boy is about to speak and "Bobby" says: "Sh! This might be me." (Then when it turns out to be another actor -- Patricia Childress -- "Luanne" says "Someone else could do that kind of voice, you know," presumably referring to her own previous assumption of Joseph.) But I wish they had more of the writers and directors doing commentary tracks. When they do the third season, "Wings of the Dope" really, really needs Johnny Hardwick (who wrote that episode) commenting on it as himself, not as Dale. Probably won't happen, though.
BTW, the "Husky Bobby" commentary is also interesting is that all three actresses sound kind of disenchanted with the message of the episode (that Hank was right to pull Bobby out of the show). At least, it sounds to me like they're speaking for themselves, rather than their characters.
Thoughts on the DVD features? Can't wait for seson 3.
