This may be a stretch, but I distinctly remember reading about a woman who survived a failed-parachute freefall when she landed in some kind of bog or swamp. Apparently, the gradually increasing density of the swamp was enough. Broke quite a few bones though.
As for the statement you made, there have not been just one case, but rather more like 3 or 4 cases where people had supposedly fallen to their deaths into areas and well come out o it with massive but survivable traumas (aka broken bones) or with very little injury at all...
One case that I remember that comes to mind is the case of a Airline stewardess (way back in 1973 who was onboard a airliner that exploeded and she survived a 23,000 foot fall...why? well the answer is quite simple at the moment of the explosion the stewardesss was in the rear of the plaie (in the galley section near the back) and the plane was blown apart, she and the tail section fell the 4 or so miles and impacted into a wswampy area... The end result was that she did suffer like 20 or so broken bones but still was able to survive...
There also have been cases that people's parachutes have failed and have landed onto surfaces like swamp bogs to actual rooves of cars and still come out of it alive.. the question is why... the answer is simple.. It depends on whether at the moment of impact with the sufrace they relaxed or not...
Now this brings up an interesting observation.... If peggy was tense at the moment of her possible demise) then the injuries would be more traumatic than if she was at peace... However there have been some instances where people in the last second or so before impact, suddntly go totally relaxed and the end result is that trauma is reduced...
I guess there are too many variables to calculate, but if at the moment of impact, the body is relaxed, then the blunt force impact trauma will be reduced....
I guess I am starting to sound like John Blunnell from one of those Fox shows dealing with the moment of Impact, or World's wildest police videos.. but the fact of the matter is that there have been numerous cases where folks have surveved 20 and even 30 story falls out of building windows and yet others have died after falls of only 10-15 feet.... I gues it it a case of whether or not the person is relaxed at the moment of impact...
Just an observation
