King of the Hill Premiere Delayed ?

As the home run chase heats up, there might be one very public victim if Fox switches it's primetime schedule to show the game that could feature St. Louis Cardinal Mark McGwire or Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa break Roger Maris' record. Hank Hill. That's right -- if the record can be tied or broken during the Tuesday, Sept. 8th game between St. Louis and Chicago,Fox will broadcast the game on the network, as opposed to its cable channel FX. That would push the heavily-hyped Tuesday season premiere of "King of the Hill"off the schedule.

As a person who is totally apathetic about sports, yet has to pay for ESPN, ESPN2, and The Sports Network in order to get basic, no-frills cable, I can easily bring myself to say this is a bad thing. I'd pay cash to see an apologetic KOTH short of Hank Hill kicking McGwire's ass. If you're going to interrupt standard programming, it should either be for a major political event, a major disaster, or a local severe weather warning. Not a baseball game.

Actually, I believe this is a 'twice in a lifetime chance', if I picked up the details correctly. Wasn't the last time the record was set about 30-ish years ago? Anyway, it looks like the record may be broken a few more times in the next few months. Will each time be as 'special'?

Yeah, a sports-nut friend of mine points out that while there are three sports-oriented channels that I listed above, events like this also have to be broadcast from a local affiliation, which is why KOTH got the boot last week. Feh. I still think they should have aired it on a less visible channel, like ABC or somthing. ;)

Fox had the rights to televise the game, and they weren't going to give those up. They paid big bucks for games all season long, so they could in turn make money off advertisers in situations like this.

No, ABC couldn't have shown the game. It's not that easy. Fox & ESPN share the baseball rights, and Fox is one of the big four, so when they get a chance to air something like Mark McGwire hitting home runs, they'll do it, with million$ of people watching.

Please tell your marketing people that there were millions NOT watching your station last week (and therefore not watching the advertising) because of the bumping of KOTH.

Also, you would think that the advertisers would realize by now that the viewers DON'T watch the commercials anyway. We use them for bathroom breaks and for channel surfing.
