USA Today, in the Life section, has its cover story on King of the Hill. I couldn't find it on its website <http://www.usatoday.com>, though, so you may have to go to the library or pay 50 cents in order to read the article.
For the most part, it talks about how the show has been successful in its post-Simpsons time slot (in fact, earning even higher ratings than Homer and family). In fact, it is the second-highest rated new show this season, behind NBC's Suddenly Susan. They state that the show is seen in nine million homes each week and is strong among the sought-after-by- advertisers 18-34 age group.
The article describes Hank Hill as "more curmudgeonly than Fred Flintstone but less so than Archie Bunker." Or, in the words of Greg Daniels, "Andy Griffith is back, and he's pissed."
Both Daniels and Mike Judge described the differences between KotH and their previous works. Daniels said that KotH is more of a "populist thing" as opposed to the Simpsons' satire. (It also says that the shows' portrayals of young children are different -- compare Bobby to Bart's smart-alecky attitude and you'll see.) Judge, meanwhile, says KotH does not make fun of everybody like Beavis & Butthead do.
How have Texans reacted to this lampooning? They've been taking it well, according to the article. They also mention that KotH is a hot topic on the Internet, making an indirect reference to the popular "Yeah, man, Itellywhat..." Boomhauer page. Judge said in the article that Boomhauer was based "on a voice-mail message from a Dallas man who once called him to complain about Beavis & Butthead."
They briefly describe the main characters on the front page, including a few things we haven't seen in any episodes yet. (Bill's an army sergeant? Boomhauer works in a barbed-wire factory? Hank played college football?) They _do_ say that Nancy cheats on Dale, and Dale's the only one in Arlen who doesn't know about this despite his obsession with conspiracies. And, yes, they spell it "Boomhauer." (No more arguments.)
