My local Fox affiliate loves that little lower-left-corner station identifier 'sticker'. This week, it covered up most of the opening title message. I saw the words, "Hey,TiVo..." and that was it. Can someone let me know the whole message please?

Hey TiVO, suggest this!

I don't know much about TiVO. I assume it "suggests" programs to watch?

the double meaning of this just occured to me (brain overload). e.g.,

  • suggest THIS (angry response to TiVO suggesting something)
  • suggest Futurama to be watched (more viewers!)

It's a TV hard drive recorder that also takes note of what you watch and thus will record similar programs in the belief that you might also want to watch those shows. (There are other, less Orwellian benefits to hard drive TV recorders, of course.)

Right. Based on the rating you give programs you watch, it suggests other shows you might like.

Given the current state of AI technolgy, I'll bet TiVO comes up with some interesting picks. Like if you watch "Just shoot me" will it suggest recording "Cops"? If you watch "King of Queens" will you get "Will & Grace"? Will watching "Ed" get you reruns of a 60's sitcom about a talking horse?

I think it works based on viewers choices. For example, if 70% of the people who record Futurama also record Simpsons, then it's recommended. Amazon uses a similar scheme to make recommendations. "People who bought 'Cat in the Hat' also ordered 'Fundamentals of Quantum Physics'" . . .

No, it will suggest therapy.

Sorry I don't watch either show, so I don't have a sarcastic comment.

Go to the source and ask the horse. He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse.

=v= I'm not entirely impressed with its choices. My housemates watch an odd assortment of shows, plus they record _Futurama_ and _The_Simpsons_ for me. TiVO just seems to reliably suggest very popular movies, which makes me wonder whether it's throwing its virtual hands up in defeat or there's some sort of deal being made to promote these movies.

=v= I used to work in AI. This type of technology, expert systems, has actually gotten pretty amazing. Even the very simple implementations can work really well.

=v= The type of mishaps we see aren't based on the technology, but on the criteria, which are generally chosen by marketing people. Their selections aren't really based on intelligence, artificial or otherwise, but on what deals can be struck. If an advertising contract stipulates that they want you to be interested in Lightspeed Briefs, then by God, the criteria they base your interests on are going to reflect that. <_Jym_>

No, but if you watch "Futurama" it will also open your calendar to Friday and order you some french fries.
