Question: commentary in Space Pilot 3k (season1 dvd)

In the commentary, they said that they want to point out the "surprises" but they didn't want to explain them because they didn't want to ruin them. They pointed out Nibbler's shadow under the desk (well, they said "there's one" but they didn't actually point out the shadow). Then they said it again when what seems to be when Nixon said "get those bums". Anybody know what that is all about?

And kudos to the Futurama crew. Apparently they knew -exactly- where the series was going, as they seem to have all the gags planned out at the beginning and then go back to it later (like Nibbler's shadow under the desk). It's kindda like Back to the Future! :o

I figured they just pretended to have backup for that episode, its cool that its actually there :)

Yeah, except there's nothing set up in "Back to the Future" that's not paid off in "Back to the Future". There are jokes set up in "Part II" that are paid off in "Part III" (Marty's whole chicken/yellow character trait, the shooting arcade joke, Strickland's "Discipline" sign, etc) but there were no plans to make a sequel to "Back to the Future" at the time of it's production, so anything you hear about seeing Doc riding around on a bike in "BTTF" is flat-out incorrect. Well, the WHY OF FRY explains the clue they pointed out in SPACE PILOT 3000 (which the revisit in another season and Fry's hairline shadow is added to Nibbler's), and as for Nixon, they knew that he was going to be President again. And it seems that Leela and Fry are meant to get together (or were meant to) and have a child... which may or may not have gone back in time to do something himself...

It isn't toward Nixon, it's toward Bender and what he does. It's not a surprise, it's a "secret joke." This is backed up by the comments that "a certain phrase comes to mind" and them commenting on the fact that the Fox censors weren't too fond of the gag, and they ended up using it in the promos for the premiere.
