Small observation about 3ACV13

Patchcord Adams mentions "Windows 3000", but in a few early interviews, Matt Groening told us that Microsoft was among the corporations which no longer exist in the year 3000. Or is Windows no longer Microsoft property?

I was wondering that myself, but figured that I had missed something so I didn't mention it. Let's assume that the government assassinated Bill Gates, used his fortune to pay off the national debt and broke up Microsoft into several companies (assuming there are no Republicans in the future ;-).

Windows is a generic name. There were "Windows" operating systems before Microsoft's. Xwindows is still commonly used on Unix and Linux computers. So perhaps, after Microsoft went out of business, another brand of Windows take's their place.

windows, and GUIs, are generic, but "Windows 3000" indicates a play off of Windows 2000 in the future, referring specifically to the product, IMHO..

=v= Perhaps it sprung from WINE, the Linux Windows emulator. I imagine that it'd continue to be maintained long after they run Gates out of business, so that people can play Doom and whatnot.

=v= I just read today that WINE has gotten so good at imitating Microsoft's wacky notion of MIME support that it's now become vulnerable to certain email-based hacker exploits. (A note to the WINE folks, if you're out there: you don't have to go overboard with this!) <_Jym_>
