I wonder that myself. And why didn't it get buried in Old New York, either? Plus, surely the electricity would've gone out in the cryonics lab after the attacks, leaving Fry dead, unless it had one heck of a backup system.

I wondered the same thing, at first. But, even though during Fry's "sleep", we dont ever see his immediate surroundings change, it seems logical that people [future people] would be taking care of the cryogenic units, and probably moved him many times. [No power failures since 1997] And when he wakes up, and walks past that picture window, it's obvious he is in NNYC. Also, when Fry first delivered the pizza, the building was [ofcoarse] typical 20th century architecture. But when he wakes up, there is all the modern convienences. [like the "Star Trek" doors] The technicians who took care of those units must have been very dedicated to thier work. Especially since, at least twice during that 1000 years, it appears that Most, if not All life in the area was wiped out. Some questions just cant be answered, I guess.

Well, we don't know for sure. It's not like a detailed history was given. Or something seems to be the more probable case though, for the Earth, or at least New York was attacked by aliens twice, giving at least some chance that the United States no longer exists as a political entity.

Seriously, though, in addition to the political theories that have been discussed, there's also an artistic consideration. In science fiction, there's a long-standing tradition of portraying future societies as being totalitarian to some degree. ("Brave New World" and especially "1984" are good examples of this.) It taps into our fears that increased technological prowess will somehow cause us to lose our freedoms. The job-control chips in "Futurama" are another instance of school of thought. Curiously, the job chips seem to be about the only evidence of totalitarianism in New New York. Perhaps the U.S. isn't destined to become a Communist state, after all.
