Irrelevant Factoids for 2ACV08

Hello, fellow beetle-browed internet fans...

I've seen the RealVideo version of 2ACV08, and I loved it. Lots of great Bender quotes too. A couple of useless observations:

'Ultimate Robot Fighting' is reminiscent of 'Robot Wars' - apparently Robot Wars is originally from the USA, but I've only seen the BBC version - there's a not-terribly-complimentary review of it at http://www.somethingawful.com/reviews/review-robotwars.htm - pretty funny even though I actually quite like the programme. :)

Fnarg is a bit like a cross between Yoda and that old fart in the really crap 'Karate Kid' films - I've probably only seen about ten minutes in total of said films, so I can't be sure.

The Lurve Toaster - a relation of Talkie Toaster (from Red Dwarf) perhaps? "Given that God is infinite, and the universe is also infinite, would you like a toasted teacake?"

Fry seems to have conquered his Slurm addiction.

Paramecium homeworld - http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/articles/param1x.html - apparently they've been living in freshwater ponds on Earth for some time. Could they be part of some advance party for the main invasion?

A lot of people have mentioned the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 reference - does anyone know if said programme is broadcast in the UK? It sounds great - I love taking the mickey out of bad science fiction films. I really annoyed my sisters by cackling wildly through 'Armageddon' which they had got out on video.

Got to go and attach a brain slug to my head...

That was one of the funnier ones, especially the first fight scene between him and leela... "I win! Rematch: I win again!"

Hey, don't put down Mr. Miyagi man. There's a lot one can take away from his 'wax on, wax off' mantra. I also kinda noted that he looked a little like the blind priest from Kung Fu because of the glassy stare he had.

It's always good to hear from someone who despises this movie as much as I did. Me and a pal pissed off a friend's g/f by ripping that awful movie from the moment it started.

It's the worst movie I've ever seen.

My friends hated me because I was cracking jokes after the first ten minutes. It was just like I was in an episode of MST3K, except my friends were throwing stuff at me.

Am I the only one on the planet who liked this movie? Not that I'm one of the cows in the MTV-Generation cattle, but I found it a pretty entertaining movie.

Sure it is fun. I myself love tons of BAD movies, doesn't really make them any better from the quality point of view. End result is that technically, for me, it WAS a good movie!

For a mascochist.

The most painfull part was Buscemi's character, "a super genius", shooting up the place.

That and how gravity varied between nonexistant and 1 standard G.

Lost in space was a better movie and it was also a stinker.

Yes, I particularly liked watching them *run* around on Mir. The "present-day" teched-out shuttle was almost as bad. What would oil-rig operators know about explosives. . . get a seismic crew.

Harsh, but true.

yeh, me and my pals liked "Lost in Space" better than "Armageddon". But, truth be told, I liked "Godzilla" and it was pretty weak. Basically, I found the Lizard King more appealing than Bruce Willis. Willis has had some pretty good roles, but all he did in "Armageddon" was spit out rehashed script from the "Diehard" series. My theory on the popularity of "Armageddon" is that it was so friggin' hot that summer that people welcomed the idea of staying in a theater for 3 hours.

Actually, the main draw for "Armageddon" was this: "Deep Impact" came out first, and was a major "chick flick." After all of the guys got dragged to that one, and I will refrain from pointing out the "inaccuracies" there, the guys got revenge by taking their girls (or just the guys) out to watch some manly men blow stuff up.

Madness. Mayhem. Destruction. Death. Campy Humor. Sex.

Great formula for a "_ick flick." (insert your letter 'd' on your own).

Hello...

Was he the one who sat on the nuclear warhead doing a Dr Strangelove? That might have been vaguely amusing if he hadn't then explained the joke... :-)

Armageddon was great fun, particularly since I'm an astrophysics student. I was practically peeing myself at some of the blatant scientific bollocks they talked. Need the HST to see an object the size of Texas a few million miles away? I'd be able to see it in daylight from Earth with my specs off! I gave up looking for the small faults after about five minutes. And the medium-sized faults after about ten.

Another fun error looked like they'd tried to appease the pedants, but made things even worse. Apparently the nuclear bomb 'vaporised all the debris' - unfortunately, said vapour still has the same kinetic energy and mass as the debris, first roasting the atmosphere then killing off all survivors in a nuclear winter. What a pity that would be...

The embarrasing thing is that the Futurama parody of it was not only funnier, but, if anything, far more scientifically accurate. I can even think of a mechanism for how the smelloscope would work.[1] :-)

Did you notice how they started Mir spinning *before* docking the shuttles to it? Just imagine how easy that would be... Look at 2001 to see how docking to a rotating spacecraft should be done - at the axis where no centripetal force is required.

Where did they keep all the fuel? (They jetissoned the main tank on takeoff, yet the main engines continued to run.) And I'd love to know how they resisted orbital velocity gravel and rubble (for a time, anyway) without immediately looking like colanders...

Nah - if you want to drill a big hole, just fire the nuclear warhead deep into the relevant asteroid. Does not require a manned spacecraft, doesn't need musclebound Hollywood stars, and is far less likely to foul up. :)

Haven't seen that one - is it also in the 'so bad it's good' category?

[1] Easy - a spectrometer linked up to some kind of smell generator. Calibration could be a bit odd, and it probably wouldn't work in daylight. And don't make me smell Uranus...

I enjoyed it for what it was. Action fluff. A weak storyline, minimal characterization, and lots of neat effects.

I went into in knowing it would not be a "Citizen Kane", so I wasn't disappointed when I saw it. In fact, some parts of the film (especially the scenes of the crew preparing for their mission) were downright entertaining, especially the moments with Steve Buscemi.

"Hey Harry, you know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has two hundred thousand moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good doesn't it?"
