Really really OT: English

Hey all.

This is super off topic, but we're not swimming in intense meaningful threads here as it is (and we all know what three letter bushy tailed mammal is to blame...) so I thought I'd post this. I think I heard it from a friend, but it really makes you think.

The English language pronounces letters pretty strangely depending on the word. Let's say that letters being pronounced completely differently than they're supposed to (such as the s in pleasure with it's z sound) in certain words can be pronounced that way regardless of the letters they are surrounded by.

Therefore...

We can spell the word "Fish" like...

Ghot.

The gh is from tough. The o is from women. The t is from notion.

Weird, eh?

I disagree. You're taking the letters out of the context of the word. The T in "notion" is pronounced that way because of its grouping with the "ion", as in "justification", "destruction", or countless other words. Kinda funny though

George Bernard Shaw first pointed out the ghoti/fish pronunciation as an argument for phonetic spelling something like 90 years ago. This joke is literally older than my grandma.
