=v= In "The Problem With Popplers," Leela refers to the thing on her arm as "this thing on my arm." Considering that she wears it 24/7, you have to assume that she knows what it's called. Therefore, it's a Thing. Or perhaps a T.H.I.N.G. <_Jym_>
P.S.: My web pages do happen to be hosted on things.org!
She doesn't wear it 24/7 you can clearly see her not wearing it at various times during the show. Just like you'll occasionally not see me with my PocketPC on me from time to time. As for the name I take it as being more of a kind of weak joke by the writers to avoid giving it a name and addressing a fan question. Because being vague is apparently funny now.
It should also be pointed out that many other people wear a t.h.i.n.g on their wrists too, (eg; cubert, amy). I think it is just an enhanced wrist watch. Like those ones that have a calculator or remote control in them.
But then again, according to "bender's arrest record" by The Police (ehehe) he stole an old fashioned regular analogue watch.
However I would have thought that by 3000 no one would be able to tell the time on one. I was informed the other day that the time was "fifty minutes past seven" rather than ten minutes to eight because the person couldnt tell the time properly on a noon-digital watch. And no, they weren't wearing adult diapers either. hehe.

I always considered them wearable computer appliances. Like a palm pilot or PocketPC you wear. A little more then just a fancy begizemoed watch. Which is why regular watches are still in style.

In a lot of older sci-fi movies, they made things futuristic by putting the word 'space' before devices. Like the 'space PocketPC' that you sometimes carry. Star Trek and more recent movies like to name things like 'tri-coders' etc. By not naming it, they don't really define what it is and thus what it is not. They are free to give it any function they want as needed.
I thought the joke was that no one knew what it was called, not even Leela.
Or possibly just "The Hand I Never Got" or something just as bad....
Although personally I think it's the amalgamation of devices that is already happening around us... You know... Phones with games, Phones with address books, digital diaries with games, phones with mp3 players, and so forth... Maybe it really is just a THING as in the amalgamation of all those sort of devices into one wrist band... Although, it seems to be missing a fragrance enhancer of some sort... It blatantly will always be a thing... True, I wouldn't mind owning one, but then again... It might only be 20 years round the corner before something similar hops onto the market... It may have a better name by then though...
I'll just stop blabbering now...

They already have wearable computers in Japan. They just don't have the kind of following to be economical in the US. At least not yet anyways. But I'm sure your right. In 20 years you'll probably be comfortably wearing a device that's 2x as powerful as the PC on your desk right now. Unless your PC is old in which case there's probably something out there now that rivals it in the hand held market.
=v= Gee whiz, you're no fun. I busted out laughing when she called it "this thing on my arm." And then I immediately had a Cubert Reflex, and had to retcon it into a T.H.I.N.G.
=v= Sometimes the Cubert Reflex is a *good* thing. Heck, that's why they were foraging for roddenberries on a Type M planet in the first place! <_Jym_>
P.S.: I'm also fond of Zoidberg's national anthem. Go figure.

No the Wrist Lo-Jack-A-MatorT is simply an option of that large Civil Service issue device. A unidirectional ranging receiver interfaced to the CPU is used to track the planted bug peripheral that detaches from the wrist end of the device.
