I've recently got round to buying and watching the S1 DVD (R2) - I've noticed every now and again a scene would have black vertical lines along the edges of the screen (i.e. the picture is narrow)
Has anybody else got this problem? Is it a computer problem or is it a faulty disk?
(If anyone's interested, one episode had the old sound/pic out-of-sync problem, but that was I think down to my computer)

What kind of TV/Screen do you have? A 16:9 TV will have these bars...
Are you watching on a DVD-ROM? if so those black lines are in what's called the overscan. the overscan gets cut off on the TV screen and you're not meant to see it anyway. Sometimes a black frame is added in the overscan so one who watches on a TV can see the whole picture, instead of losing an inch of footage around the edge.
This seems like a likely explanation.. And yes, it's on a computer monitor/DVD-ROM that I'm using.

Basically, the amount of image lost on the edges of a TV screen, usually around 4-5% of the image. The overscan is there to hide any distortions in the image caused by analogue transmission.
