Time travel... it HAS to happen SOMEtime on this show, doesn't it?

I mean, let's face it... this IS a sci-fi show (as much as it pains me to admit that, it's true) and as with all sci-fi shows, there HAS to be the prerequisite time travel episode. I wonder how the writers would deal with it? Perhaps it would go something like this:

Leela: Dammit! We missed the landing window! Now countless millions of Zifarians will die because we couldn't get our delivery of water on time! A horrible plague and all they needed was a little H20.

Fry: That's terrible! Isn't there anything we can do?

Bender: We could enter their atmosphere, open a window and urinate or spit on some of them. That'd help, wouldn't it?

Fry: Heheh. Finally a comeback to the line "It's better to be pissed off than pissed on." Now I can say, "Unless you're a Zifarian."

Leela: Nice idea, Bender, if a little twisted. No. We'll just go back in time and deliver it then.

Fry: WOW! You mean we can time travel? COOL!

Leela: Bender, you're a robot. Make the calculations to send us back two days in time. That way we can deliver the water antidote before we needed to and they have enough time to administer it.

Fry: But won't that cause, like, a paradox or something? We wouldn't need to be here at all if we'd done it already. It could rip a hole in the time/space continuum. I think.

Leela: Hey, I don't write the script, I just do what I'm told. Do it, Bender.

Bender (warily): Okaaaay. (works madly on his computer for a few seconds) Done!

Leela: Good Did you send it to my navigation computer?

Bender: Yup.

Amy (from her station in the back of the ship): Hey! What's with all the numbers???

Bender: Ooops. Sorry. Now ya got it, Leela.

Leela: Okay, I see it. Hold on to your girders, everybody!

Bender: THAT'S NOT FUNNY!!

The ship seems to shimmer out of normal space for a few seconds and then it reappears.

Leela: Okay! We're though. How far back did we come?

Bender (check his computer): Ahhh... two minutes.

Leela: WHAT?!?!?

Bender: Hey, what'd you expect? I'm an alcoholic robot, not an engineer.

Well... it COULD happen like that. =D

Actually, having them travel back in time to the 20th century, (accidently), would be pretty kewl. They have to collect whales or somefuck... Fry gets this strange idea to revive himself form the cryolabs, Leela has to talk him out of it...

I think I have an idea for how that could go, actually....

Leela: Fry, you can't bring yourself out of cryofreeze.

Fry: Why the hell not? I could probably even sue them for getting me stuck in there in the first place.

Leela: First of all, the cryofreeze process is done on a voluntary basis and since you essentially froze yourself, you'd have no grounds to sue. Second, even if you COULD get in there you wouldn't know what to do. Remember, I worked there myself. If anyone has a clue how to do it, it's me.

Fry: Oh. (pauses for a second) So, would you?

Bender: Come on, Fry, you wouldn't wanna do that.

Fry: Oh, yeah? Why not?

Leela: Because, from what you've told us, you were a total loser in your time. Look at all the wonderful things you've done with us since you woke up!

Fry: Oh, yeah. Sure. Let's see here. I almost got lost on the Moon, arrested as a job deserter, I'm shacked up with a lunatic robot- no offense, Bender-

Bender: Screw you, Ugly-Bag-Of-Mostly-Water!

Fry: -almost got blown up on a dying planet, I'm STILL a delivery boy and I'm STILL a loser.

Bender: Don't forget the suicide booth!

Leela: Bender! You're not helping any.

Bender: Hey, Fry's my buddy! If he wants to miss ALL that, then it's my job as his friend to support him.

Fry: See? At least in my time I'm a loser who knows what he's facing.

Leela: Good point. Okay, I'll help you unfreeze yourself.

Bender: What? But you just said that-

Leela: Oh, go switch off, you lunatic robot.

Bender: I can't.

Leela: Why not?

Bender: Fry accidentally broke my Off Switch thinking it was a light switch in the apartment.

Maybe it wouldn't be all that funny, now that I think about it. Fry might be perfectly happy where he is, ya know?

A very funny script! You should be hired as a writer for Futurama! If not today, go back in time and try again yesterday.

And yes, you're right. There has to be another time-travel episode. I say "another" because time travel was a factor in the very first episode.

It would be funny if Fry, Bender and Leela (and perhaps the rest of the crew) got sent to the present day somehow. Maybe a cameo from The Simpsons would work affectively. Who knows?

I thought I read in Spin Magazine that the reality the Simpsons are in is supposed to be entirely fictional (i.e., the Simpson's television series is something Fry would know about) in the Futurama reality. Rather than do what you suggested, if I understood the Spin Magazine article correctly, Fry & Co. could instead end up in the Simpsons reality and realize (much to their amazement) that they're cartoons.

Fry: Hey, Leela, you're all pastel-ly.

Leela: Don't you mean "pasty"?

Fry: No. I mean pastel-ly. Look at yourself! Pastel colors!

Bender: OH, DAMN MY METAL EYE IMPLANTS! I'VE BEEN COLORED BY NUMBERS!!!

Leela: Oh, my God. We're cartoons!

Bender: Well, that'd explain how I can keep pulling things out of my chest.

Fry: Hey! If we're really cartoons, then that means we're invincible!

Leela: Fry, what are you talking about?

Fry: Well, haven't you ever seen anvils and stuff dropped on a cartoon's head and in the next scene the cartoon seems okay?

Bender pounds Fry squarely on the head, making his friend a few inches shorter.

Fry: OW! WHY'D YOU DO THAT?!?!?

Bender (shrugs): Trying to prove your point. Looks like you were wrong.

Fry: Just wait until the next scene.

Next scene opens up and Fry is still shorter than he was.

Leela (to Fry): Well?

Fry (darkly): I don't want to talk about it.

Thanks a lot for the compliment. Now, if only someone would just tell me how to get in touch with the Futurama writers. Maybe then I'd have a snowball's chance in hell of getting some side work... =P

Sorry, but that was cryogenics, not time travel.
