"JFK Jr. Airport" line to be changed

I have confirmation from a private source that the line spoken in Sunday night's [Aug. 7] episode, [1ACV01] "Space Pilot 3000", will in fact be changed to something less sensitive. I was not told exactly what the new line will be. Fire up your VCR's if you like to keep copies of episodes' ambiguities.

There has been speculation in recent days in this ng under the thread "line in pilot episode" about this topic.

For those of you who don't remember, a man walked into a `NNYC People Tube' and stated his destination "JFK Jr. Airport". In addition to that, there has been one other reference to the airport named after him, remember this FOX promotional .jpg from several months ago? http://futurama.simplenet.com/jfk_jr_airport.jpg

For more on this episode, see [1ACV01] Episode Capsule: http://futurama.simplenet.com/episodes/1ACV01.txt

And finally, this is not the first time something like this has occured with a MG cartoon. Here's the entry from my Simpsons Archive file "Dearly Departed on the Simpsons"

http://www.snpp.com/guides/departed.html
Dr. Haing S. Ngor
passed away on 2.25.96, a murder victim
In [3F10] Team Homer, about a month before his death, a scene
showed Homer with Dr. Ngor's Best Supporting Actor Oscar for
The Killing Fields. Homer had crossed out his name, and wrote
in Homer Simpson. Dave Kathman says, "Dr. Haing S. Ngor is a
real doctor, a refugee from Cambodia." Dr. Ngor's life was
filled with tragedy. After his death, the oscar joke was
thought to be in poor taste, so instead of cutting the scene
in syndication, his name was replaced. [aired 1.7.96]

Benjamin Robinson reveals further irony in this story: "...for following showings Ngor's name was digitally replaced with Don Ameche. By odd coincidence, Ameche also died (of natural causes) after the revised episode aired. I don't think the name was changed for a third time, possibly for fear of sending another hapless actor to his grave."

It was changed to "Radio City Mutant Hall" on tonight's episode.

That's right, and let me tell you, the mutants are really upset about it!!!

It was left intact on Global in Canada.

Canadians can be so sensible at times... I wonder if I can get the local area to secede. We get enough Canadians here part of the year anyway. :)

Let's hope they just changed it temporarily and on the next airing put things back to the good way. Or IOW, actually funny. RC Mutant hall just isn't...something to laugh at..

Maybe they're just lazy. Or clueless. Or inconsiderate bastards. It could be interpreted any number of ways.

Radio City Mutant Hall is more humorous than some dead president's son's name on an airport, dead or alive. It also fits in nicely with the other attractions like Madison Cube Gardens.

Or maybe, who her cares? He's a Yankee celeb anyways. Maybe, who would notice? Hell, half the people in here didn't notice the first time. Going out of your way to deny the fact something happened by avoiding all possible reference to it or to avoid stirring up "feelings" is pathetic... Not clueless or inconsiderate, not like how generalizing about a large, diverse group of people is clueless and inconsiderate.

And I think it's sensible behavior. You can feel otherwise, if you want, no skin off my nose.

I personally don't think it is funny at all. It just doesn't make me laugh. It's just a change of words that really doesn't seem in any way hilarious to me.

How so? Madison Cube Gardens is funny, because it's a name change which has some humorous context, but I can't see much reason for Mutant Hall popping up.

And at other times they can be even more foolish than the folks in the USA.

It must be a tremendour blow to the family that this line was changed. After all, JFK jr. loved to fly. It must have been a real compliment to him that in the year 3000, there would be an airport named after him. Now they have changed all that, and there is no airport to attest to his love of flying. That's a real shame.

I aggree, Paul. I dont think they should have changed it in the first place, but I can understand why, I guess. Let's just hope they only changed it for this airing, and the original line remains for future re-runs. I think it was more of a tribute than anything else. He [JFK jr] had a real passion for flying, and I think he would be honored by it.

Actually I heard he only started flying private planes to escape the media circus that followed him around. He also didn't want to learn until after his mom died. My screen background here is the Futurama landscape shot and in the bottom right is the billboard "Visit scenic Neptune, flights on the hour from JFK, Jr. Airport" I suppose this will have to change too in some episode.

Why music got turned into mutant escapes me though. Perhaps the Rockettes are all now of Dr Zoidberg's species (no pumps, all sandals).

Disregarding the fact that the Kennedys probably don't watch Futurama, I'd wager that the last thing they want to do is celebrate JFK Jr's love of flying. That's like celebrating Christopher Reeve's skill at horseback riding, or James Dean's interest in motorcycles. Ugh. Besides, you can consider the airport as still being there . . . it just won't be mentioned again. For what it's worth, I like "Radio City Mutant Hall" better, but they're both just minor jokes really.

Ben Mann / [email]

Not sure how James Dean's love of motorcycles fits in, in that he died when someone made a left turn in front of the __sports car__ he was driving and he couldn't stop in time.

God, that is so freaking stupid--- it's like just because he died we're suddenly not allowed to say his name anymore. If it were something which insulted JFK Jr. then it would be a different story. Hey, JFK died before his time too! I guess we should all refrain from mentioning him in TV programs too!
