In the Christmas speical of Futurama, when they showed Leela go get her book of memories, I noticed that in one of the pictures when she was a kid, she has braces, and was in an orphanage and in the background of that picture, kids were laughing at her.
The question is why did she have braces? Was it to make her look like more of an outcast? Or was it to make her look like she was 'geeky' when she was a child? What do you people think?

A little of both, I think. What I don't understand is why she didn't have a prom date. You could say it was her eye, but do you really think that a teenage boy would have cared about that part of her?
