American election imitating Futurama

In the American alection a dead governor gets re-elected and the whole election is in stasis because a couple of thousand voters punched the wrong hole on a ballot. That sounds like how Tricky Dick got re-elected in last season's "A Head in the Polls".

If you missed the movie "Election" last year, now is the time to watch it. It's hysterical, and incredibly dead on, with the election debacle.

Ford has also been used as an example of not challenging a vote count. Of course, that was right after Agnew resigned in a tax evasion scandal and Nixon resigned rather than face impeachment for Watergate. If Ford had challenged and won, he might not have had the moral authority to lead.

But back on topic. This election, like Futurama does point out how important a single vote can be. At one point, New Mexico's vote count gave Dubya the lead by 17 votes. One guy with a van could have stuffed in enough friends to turn the election over.

So, there's your lesson. Register and vote! And don't give me that "I'm not an American" excuse either. As long as you can find a birth certificate issued anywhere in the US, one of the major parties can surely get you registered.

Fortunately, I live in a city with very progressive attitudes towards the vitally-challenged. While i am not aware of any dead people actually holding office, they do vote in many regional elections.
