Do the ruins of old NY and the mutant underworld occupy the same space? Same thing?

Yes because recall in "Luck Of The Fryrish" 3ACV04 The Mutant that mutated from Andy Goldman was under the sewer grate of Old New York.

Unfortunaly in other eps like "Leela's Homeworld" the mutant world is directly beneath the surface. Either New York is a lot smaller than New New York and a lot of empty spaces in there (remember even in front of PlanEx building when bender drops some toxic waste, there are mutants) or the mutant/New York worlds are a bit intermixed. For example, why shouldn't the mutants reside in some parts of New York and in others they wouldn't. Would save them a lot of time instead of waiting for a lot of bricks to be flushed into the toilet :)

This I can buy. Some parts of New New York are over Old New York and other parts are directly over ground. So the sewer system may for parts travel under Old New York, and other times be close to the surface. Also thinking back in "I, Roommate" 1ACV03 (I think) Bender says "A little Fire will show them [mutants] who's boss." in regards to moving into Old New York. So possibly they even do live in parts of Old New York that may have settled farther like you see in I think "Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles" 4ACV09 the place where Leela's parents live is over a large open area that connects directly with the streets of New New York. Now that I think Of it They're everywhere down there.

I can tell you where the mutants live: whereever it happens to be funniest at the time.

Hmm. That's some very long and time consuming points you've brought up there. I prefer not to think too much about the technicalities of the show and enjoy it for what it is. But if you get some kick out of picking it apart and examining it minutely, piece by piece, fine - it's not hurting me.
