Just as I thought Fox programming can't get any stupider they still do another Homer. They should have cleaned house after the Fall lineup that got Harsh Realm cancelled and Family Guy and Action on hiatus after only a few weeks. It's almost guaranteed that if there's a football game Sunday night that Futurama will have to be delayed an half hour or dropped from the lineup entirely.

As with Global, the 7pm slot is for 60 Minutes so it looks like they will put Futurama on the previous Saturday night with KOTH (think spoilers from Canada).

Haynes Lee wrote in message ...

Well, football is over with by February - well, I think the Superbowl is in February, but that's it.. I'm sure this won't be the lineup for next fall. Fox will probably move that stupid video show in at 6 CST/7EST just in case football runs late.

Hey, BTW, how was it that the Simpsons got a Sunday at 8 timeslot? That's one of the strongest times in the week....I think I recall the original airing of 7G08 (which was advertized as the NEW Christmas Special for the 90's families, and gave absolutely NO hint that this was a regular series) being on at 7PM or something like that, and then a couple weeks later my family ran into the show after a football game, and I soon began taping episodes on a weekly basis (unfortunately, I fell out of that habit by the second season, and besides an occasional taping, I didn't really pick up the habit again until season 10, when I finally realized that NOT getting primetime episodes would mean missing lines and scenes forever)

Anyone know/remember what FOX had in that timeslot before the Simpsons (remember that this was only the 3rd year of the FOX network, and at the time they were only broadcasting on weekends and Sundays.....and NO football at the time)?

And before that: Tracy Ullman was on at 8pm followed by Duet at 8:30.

A quick question is it my imagination or has Dan Castellaneta, Yeardly Smith and Julia Kavner been on Fox every year since its premiere? Smith,Castellaneta and Kavner were part of the cast on the Tracy Ullman show.

That's central time, Dan. "Tracey Ullman" was never regularly scheduled in the timeslot "The Simpsons" is in today.

The whole idea behind the Tracy Ullman Show was that the cast was an ensemble, not only did they do comedy sketches but they acted, sang and danced. The idea was floated along to the Simpsons shorts, many of the TUS cast were the voice actors. This is probably why she felt that she was due some money after the Simpsons went on their own with much success.

In alt.tv.futurama, on the "Re: Sunday FOX Changes" thread, Dan Tropea wrote:

Nope. All of Kavner's voices have that slightly scratchy and hoarse -- yet endearing -- sound to them. (She claims it's due to a bump or irregularity on her vocal chords.) Lisa, in the "Ullman" shorts, does not have this quality. In fact, she sounds just the way you'd expect Yeardly Smith to sound.

Earler, Mr. Tropea asked:

You can add Nancy Cartwright (voice of Bart) to that list, as well. Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer came along when the "Simpsons" became a full-fledged series.

Dean Humphries noted:

I heard that Ullman seemed pretty quick to disown that idea when someone asked her about it on a talk show. It was probably her lawyers' bright idea.

Oh, and to answer Richard E. Green's original question:

Because, in those days, Fox only broadcast on Sundays. (Well, maybe by 1990 they had expanded to a whopping two days a week.) Initially, Fox was bullish on "The Simpsons," so it makes sense that they'd want to launch the show on a favorable timeslot.

It was the 9th year (season, rather) of FOX by the time "The Simpsons" snagged the 8 PM timeslot on Sunday. By that point, FOX broadcasted every night of the week. Monday had also been added before "The Simpsons" ' Christmas special premiered.

"Married... With Children" - kicked off the timeslot for FOX's first prime time broadcast on 5 April, 1987. Aired there until October, 1987.

"Werewolf" - October, 1987 to March, 1988

"Martin" - August, 1993 to July, 1994

"The Simpsons" moved in August, 1994. Has yet to go away.

I've got three first season episodes on tape from the original broadcasts (one with the end credits to "America's Most Wanted" before it) and there are coming up next promos of "Married... With Children" during the commercial breaks. Since one's the Christmas special and another is the last episode aired, "Some Enchanted Evening", I'd have to say no.

I confirmed with two reference books and two online sources and they all have it as having aired from December, 1989 to August, 1990 at 8:30 PM. I don't remember it airing at 8 ever that season. Not to say it didn't happen that "AMW" was pre-empted a week or two and back to back "Simpsons" episodes were run. It just wasn't its regular slot.

Also, I don't remember the pre-debut promos and I don't think I have any tape. It certainly could have been moved before it debuted. "Malcolm in the Middle" and "Manchester Prep" sure aren't going to debut in the timeslots they were announced in. One of 'em's not gonna debut at all.

And considering I hate King of the Hill I don;t wanna sit through it to watch the simpsons. Sunday night is the only night I watch TV fully!

Maybe you don't *like* it, but that doesn't make it *stupid*. On the contrary, it's very smart. The spot following the Simpsons is very valuable, and a dumb marketing move on Fox's part would be to waste it on a show that's already a success. Instead, they're using it for a new show that they hope will appeal to a similar demographic as the Simpsons. In addition, the cadre that is accustomed to watching both Futurama and the Simpsons will add to King of the Hill's viewership, with KotH occupying the spot between them. You may not "wanna" sit through KotH, but Fox wants you to. Good moves by Fox's schedulers... whose job, after all, is to guarantee maximum viewership of Fox programs, not to make you happy.

These days watching a new show is a really complicated process. Before you just set your vcr once and tape for the whole season. Now you just tape three episode before the show is pre-empted by a ball game, put in another time slot, put on hiatus, or downright cancelled.

Speaking of which, how has the show Frasier been doing since it was moved to Thursdays? I just never got used to the time change from Tuesdays (why oh why must they change something that works so well??) and the show became less funny it seemed (although that may have just been a coincidence) and I don't even watch it anymore (except for that Peri Gilpin....she's still got it!) and lately I've been watching Greed instead. Did NBC REALLY think that the American audiences would be dumb enough to tune into Frasier, thinking that Seinfeld was still on or something? I really don't think that the Seinfeld fanrange could even understand the humour of the show (I still love that line I saw when for whatever reason I was watching WWF a couple of years ago and the commantators were talking about Frasier and the guy dressed like the King said "I watch Frasier when I do my homework...it helps stimulate my mind")

i stopped liking frasier since it turned into the girlfriend of the week show.

every week frasier, niles, martin, or all three have new girlfriends and somehow they screw it up. i thought they were supposed to be two doctors and a retired cop with a handicap... not the tv version of animal house.

Not that there's anything wrong with animal house, but it just doesn't go along with the premise of a radio psychiatrist living with his elderly father.

It's worked that way since the beginning of network television.

I know that network execs seem to not be the brightest bulbs around. Although i think Brandon Tartikoff was a fantastic network executive. I definately miss him.

But how exactly is Herzog great at development? Lets see when he came to Fox it was definately on a downturn now he is screwing up their only night thats competitive with the networks. What has he developed that has worked out? Action - failure, Get Real - failure, PoF spinoff - failure, Friday night duo of Harsh Realm and Caulfield - failures. He has also alienated 2 out of his four biggest creators - Groenig and Carter. I think its only a matter of time that he alienates Spelling and DEK - 2 people you do not want to alienate especially Spelling. Charmed and 7th Heaven is doing as well as any Fox show slotted against them.

A program similar to Married With Children(a show I have never liked except for a few times), but it's worse. "Malcolm" (or, at least the pilot for it), is very funny, and really comes across as a live-action "Simpsons," which does make it compatible in the timeslot. Still, it's not as perfect a fit as "Futurama," and Fox would've been much smarter to just pair it with "That '70s Show" on Tuesdays.
