Hey folks haven't been around here in a while. Figured perhaps you folks are talking about all this stuff. Is this last season of the simpsons?
But is it true? Is MST3K's time slot changed or is it, gasp, cancelled? It is cancelled, isn't it. How depressing. The only other decent show on Sci-fi other than Twilight Zone. So what is going to happen to Best Brains? Are they going their separate ways? Is it all over? Can MST be seen anywhere on TV now?
Next: Did anyone see Ravenous? And if so, thoughts? It looked like something I would have enjoyed.
And speaking of wacky adventure period piece movies that seem to elude being a single genre, I saw the Mummy. And it's a good entertaining action adventure movie. It's visually appealing, It's got a fictional history behind it, it's fun. It's got no substance, of course, it's not a good "film". And I guess I have a similar opinion regarding that movie GO. I never really liked Pulp Fiction that much. I felt GO was better than Pulp Fiction. Why do they compare? Because they are two roving camera, chromatically non-linear (meaning the narrative is chopped up as the camera goes and follows different characters during essentially the same time period, so the same time period is repeated three times rather than chronologically- oh whatever, you get it) where a. everything and everyone is totally cool and hip b. there are wacky and death defying close calls c. the action unfolds in a colorful underground that only drug dealers, drug users, ravers, hitmen, swingers- would be familiar with But it's fast-paced, good action, keeps you on the edge of your seat, funny, entertaining. No substance, not a great "film". The story, I admit, is complex and unfolds cleverly. The characters-suck. are wooden. But that's okay because in a movie like GO, they don't really have to be more than wooden.
Okay, now on to Star Wars. I knpow nobody really cares about my HO, but everybody was going back and forth on that Mummy thread so I figured what the heck. I live in Manhattan, and a friend of mine has procured tickets to see it Wednesday at 1:00pm. Now I liked Star Wars when I was a lad. Up to this day my favorite SW movie is Return of the Jedi, probably because of the whole Jabba the Hut part. However, when I got older and I read Joseph Campbell, I grew to dislike Star Wars, and not because the story is taken directly from the hero myth format, I thought that was quite clever. Mainly because I stopped appreciating things in which good and evil are like black and white and mythology becomes simplified to a bunch of robots so modern white trash can be taken into some horrible distorted Aeschylian optimistic catharsis. The wookie just loses its appeal. I think the Fifth Element is better than the SW trilogy. I still watch Star Wars if it xcomes on TV. Only because it's fun nostalgia, good action movies. I don't care what anyone says, they are not Good films, like an Orson Welles movie, a bergman movie or even such recent excellently well crafted movies as Buffalo 66, Rushmore, City of Lost Children, whatever this is kind of irrelevant. Anyway, my friend who procured the ticket hates Star Wars with a passion. I just don't care for it, he hates it. So why, you ask, did he buy tickets for the first day. Mainly because this is New York, and we both want to see a bunch of fat guys wielding light sabers and dressed up like Admiral Ackbar.
But finally, I haven't seen one positive review of TPM. They all say the same thing: it's visually stunning, but the story is extremely weak and there is no character development and they are weak characters to begin with. And the new puppets look like retarded computer generated cheeseburgers with eyes. And all the actors are people who were really popular about two, three years ago. To be honest, I'm excited and looking forward to seeing it. There is no doubt this movie will make money, even if the die-hard fans are disappointed. And I disagree that "even if Lucas filmed dog shit for 2 hours, the fans would love it." I seriously believe the fans will be disappointed. Plus, no movie could ever live up to this hype surrounding TPM.
Perhaps what they need to do is take Lucas off the project, let some other people write it, and maybe even direct it, but I can't really say that yet. Definitely let some other people write it. Lucasarts and Lucasfilm have given us a lot of great things. All the Star Wars computer games are great. Indiana Jones- great movies. Anyone remember Zak McKracken and the alien mindbenders? Maniac Mansion? Curse of Monkey Island? Great company. Now those were quality products.
