the future of futurama

hi there, i'm from belgium (europe) and futurama isn't broadcasted here. I wonder one thing : is futurama a success as tv show ? (personnaly i find it excellent) Will the Fox make a season 3

Looking at Fox's other shows. And the condition of their old "Top Shows." I think we will see Futurama for a LONG time. (At least till season 4)

Futurama seems to me to be the next "Simpsons" -- a completely refreshing 180-degree spin on the sludge that's on the air. I think it's starting to escalate like the Simpsons did. And, as you said, it's about the best Fox has. The only other animated success they've had is the Simpsons, and 90% of the rest of their programming is, as Fry would say, "Worlds Blankiest Blank" programs (with the exception of That 70's Show).

I think it is good, I also think the Simpsons is good and Family Guy and the PJ's and The Critic and lotsa other cartoons! I don't think that Moesha is good or anything that comes on about 5:00pm in SF, bay area. On or off Cable.

I think that "Futurama" is an excellent show because it subtly talks about societal and political issues. It uses parody and satire to bring these ideas forth. MG is a brilliant guy for using the characters of the show to play out ideas regarding the television audience, ecology, different cultural phenomenons as well as investigating the complexities of relationships, romantic or otherwise. The reason why I like the show is that it is subversive--and unrepentant about it. It beats the bland television fare on the other networks trying to appease the "mainstream".

As far as this season is concerned, I love Futurama much more than the Simpsons (though the one where Apu has eight kids is great). As the seasons go on, I've noticed that the Simpsons have progressively gotten more and more random. Look at the episode where Homer finds the Loch Ness monster and then this past one with that stupid motorcycle duel. The Simpsons are relying on more and more wacky situations instead of the good material of past episodes.

Futurama on the other hand has me rolling on the floor all the time. Admittedly, I have a much broader sense of humor as it seems I'm the only person who gets all the jokes and nuances of the show in the TV lounge when the other people are mostly quiet. The Simpsons draws a huge crowd of like 30 students in my TV lounge alone, but Futurama just 5 at most. I don't get it. I think given time, Futurama will continue to catch on.

Sometimes it works. Like for instance, I love the Loch Ness monster episode. It's just so strange it's funny. Who would predict that Nessie would end working at a Las Vegas casino? But sometimes it doesn't. Like this weeks cycle episode.

Futurama works the same way. I found this weeks Zapp Brannigran's crazed antics to be just incredibly stupid (as always). But last weeks episode was pretty funny with the mutants in the sewer.

The Simpsons wasn't like this until about season 4. But this doesn't bother me at all. If both were done equally well, I would rather see unusual situations than "slice of life" stuff. But there's a lot more to it than just saying the situation was wacky. The questions perhaps are was it explained, was there some logic to it, was it only a stretch because it was parodying something else, etc.

Can't say I agree, I would offer that as the prime example of The Simpsons totally losing it, mutating into illogical, unexplained silliness in place of calculated laughs.

His name in the credits is about the only association he has left. Mike Scully is pretty much in charge of everything there now and he's let it gone to hell.

The sheer brilliance of "Futurama" and how it has all the great elements the Simpsons used to have is proof that MG is the driving force.

I just hope the same fate doesn't befall Futurama in a few years and it sells itself out to the lower common denominator in exchange for higher ratings.

Fox hasn't officially picked up a third season, and won't make the decision at least until the spring, but the staff is planning on it nevertheless. Two episodes this year are planned to be held over for the yet-unconfirmed Season Three.
