Fry fell into the chamber on New Year's Eve 1999 very late in the night. When he came out in 2999, he had the whole day to run around and do stuff and it wasn't until much later, when the fireworks covered his escape. So actually the cryo-chamber didn't preserve for 1000 years--it preserved him 999 years and 364 days!

I know, I know, The original makers of the Cryo chamber only gave it a 3 digit readout (Y1K anyone?) and on the 999th year and during the 365th day it realized it could never get to 1000 years and opened up.
Well, I remember a post somewhere, but I'm not sure in which ng...anyway, it basically said that ya have to admit that only being one day off is pretty damn good for an egg timer.
