Nibbler+Who? (in the 20th century)

Ok, we all now that Nibbler was around when Fry gets frozen. In today's episode, I saw this twice - first, Nibbler's eye in the trash can, then his shadow. But this time, we have a new angle on his shadow. And in the same frame, there is a shadow of something else, too! This is definitely in addition to Nibbler, and is a larger figure with pointy ears and tubes going from the sides of its head to its shoulders; that I do not recognize the character. Its at about 9:30 into the episode.

The new shadow looks like Fry, but not the Fry that's about to fall into the tube, but another Fry! Maybe in "The Why of Fry" Nibbler takes Fry back and he actually witnesses himself being frozen!

Either way the ending brought me to tears and the Amy/Leela wrestling match brought me to something else.

I'm glad someone else caught this too. I had been referring people to the Pilot episode since it first aired about a shadow resembling Nibbler in the cryogenics lab as Fry falls out of his chair. And of course there would eventually come an explanation for why his shadow is there. After 3 seasons I had guessed they forgot about it by now, but I was wrong about that!

I definately saw Nibbler's 3rd eye popping out from inside the trash can, and the 2nd new shadow that was not seen in the original Pilot! Now we know for sure Nibbler was indeed there... but, with who?

Actually, we know several things:

a) From the Tales of the Unexpected ep, we know that Fry's tripping into the lab is a crux in space/time.

b) Nibbler's race, albeit ravenous and cute, purring like cats, are the first sentient beings ever.

I'd say it's a setup for a future episode. In fact, bank on it. The gang will be back in the 20th century again, and will be involved in making sure Fry ends up in the 30th century.

In fact, I'm betting it'll be the final ep on FOX of Futurama.

Looks like Nibbler was ALWAYS there, but this time, he's got a new friend. But I don't ever recall actually SEEING Nibbler's eye stalk (though it was at a new angle.

That was not necessarily Nibbler though, remember that there are LOTS of Nibblonions out there, perhaps they were on earth back in 1999 and were insuring that Fry get frozen since (if I remember it right, and I might not be) he is "destined" to defeat the brains. There may not be any time travel involved at all, just the Nibblonion on earth at the time helping make sure a "prophecy" turned out right.

Forgotten? Certainly not. In the first anthology of interest, when Fry asks what would happen if he didn't get frozen, they showed the scene where he fell into the tube. But, he misses the tube and bangs his head. If you check that scene, the Nibblonian shadow isn't there.

This seems to imply that if the Nibblonian wasn't there, Fry would have missed the tube and the space brains would destroy the earth and all creation etc. It's all part of a grand story arc that, thanks to Fox (rhymes with sucks) we may not get to see played out.

You think this means the Nibblonian was responsible for the tip (or at least made the chair tip in the right direction)?

Exactly. For Fry to miss the tube, the Nibblonian would have to have not been there. Since, in the Anthology of interest, it would have been cheaper to simply re-use the original animation, why else re-draw it? The only difference was the absence of the shadow on the wall.

In the episode with the space brains, the Nibblonians explain how important it was for Fry to be on earth shortly after the year 3000. The eye sticking up in the trash can just re-inforces the fact that at least one of them was there back in 2000. Nibbler was planted on the planet where Leela found him to keep track of Fry.

Actually I'm pretty sure it's not a new angle. I thought maybe the angle was a bit wider in this episode or something...but as far as I can tell, it's an otherwise identical shot.

This is definitely in

The capsule points out that it may be a future version of Fry, which would be terribly ironic (I think someone here said awhile back that Fry may have been with Nibbler, and he *was* the one making the crank call). The fact that the second shadow isn't present in 1ACV01 seems to reinforce the idea of time travel / altering reality.

Then again, when "Roswell That Ends Well" aired, Cohen pointed out that the use of time travel would be a one-time thing, saying how much he and the other writers hated sci-fi shows that used it as a deus ex machina for everything. With such strong feelings, I doubt they'd use time travel again unless they had one *hell* of a story to tell. So if that *is* Fry...4ACV10 is going to be a jaw-dropper.

-C Still wondering about the mysterious glasses guy in 2ACV16, though.....

This i find a very interesting theory. The fact that Fry specifically tells the guy he delivers his pizza to (Seymore Ass), before he met the dog, not to count on it that he won't make a fake delivery again.

There appears to be a shadow of the table that wasn't in the original. They were careful about the details to the point that the chair in both scenes has the same patch on it, so I don' think it's an accident.

It looked more like a coffee pot on a table to me. I thought they would eventually close the loop by having Fry go back in time and make the prank phone call to order the pizza. The shadow didn't look like Fry, to me, but then, who knows?

Then why does the "coffee pot" move?

I don't think it was a coffee pot, since there was no coffee pot on the table, but it did look a little like one. I really don't know what it's supposed to be. I hope they tie up the whole thing before the last episode.

Fry falls, the Nibblonian shadow is there, and even after the chair is on the ground, the "new Fry" shadow moves a little bit. I think it's a shadow of Fry from the doorway. Lonely Tylenol Boring: I arraign, I sit, I plan, I run, I pee deep in urinal pit, I sing, I arraign, I rob!

Bender's head was left back in 1947, remember? Maybe he has something to do with this. (And Fry was the one who originally sent them back in time, microwaving some popcorn. So ... part of the plan of sending Fry to 3000 would be to defeat the giant brains, and then send him back to 1947, so he could be his own grandfather, so that he would be born (and exist) to be sent to the year 3000 ... To become his own grandfather, he would have to go back in time to 1947, but the technology didn't exist in 1999, so he had to be frozen until the technology could be invented to send him back to 1947. And to cause the accident that sent the ship back in time, he had to defeat the brains. (Or was that AFTER the Roswell episode?))

... Anyone see the Red Dwarf episode "Ouroboros", where Lister is his own father? It's deja vu all over again ...

Definitely. That episode was just on PBS last weekend.

I used to have a list of Red Dwarf - Futurama connections.

Both involved a loser who ended up in the future by accident. Both loser eventually meet up with their long lost ex-girlfriends. Both of then end up being their own descendants. Both shows go back in time and alter historic events. Futurama / Roswell and Red Dwarf / The Kennedy assassination. Kryten and Bender both overcome their programming, but not completely. Kryten is still driven to clean and Bender eventually succumbs to the urge to bend.

There were a bunch more that I can't remember. I will have to find and update the list there were some good ones and some iffy ones as well.

I taped every episode of both shows and watched them repeatedly.

I think everyone who thinks this is Fry is on drugs. I may be proven wrong in a future episode, but I don't buy the "its Fry's shadow cast a weird angle with his hands over his ears" theory one bit.

This is some other character, possible one that hasn't been introduced yet, or someone with big earrings.

My 2 cents...
