I just watched Roswell that ends well. Did anybody notice the flying saucer and fighter airplane graffiti by the phone while grandma was getting the news of Ennis' death? George in Las Vegas

No. But, I did wonder why P-51B fighters were chasing the Planet Express. They should have been P-51Ds. The B went out of production in '43 or 44.

The army retired thousands of aircraft after the war, there was no need for them or money to maintain them. With no war in the near future and jet aircraft on the horizon there was no point in spending the money to store them. Of the thousands of P-51s only a handful survived. Some of the bombers are even rarer. They probably kept the newer/better models. Nodody thought a tank on an aviation base was an oddity? I enjoy the show and forgive or forget the errors. That is a good point.

Maybe they were surplus Shermans they used to tow planes around that just happen to have ammo and gunners in them.

Since I didn't tape the episode, I can't say for sure, but, I don't remember them having Malcolm hoods. I didn't even notice about the armament. I still say they should have been D models. Without researching it, I can't say what would have been around Roswel at that time. Perhaps even P-80s would have been more appropriate. =)

Looking at the frame grabs from www.gotfuturama.com they are P-51D's

Imagine it. After the war, the Army Air Core literally chopped planes apart and had acres of the "we might use them again" type in mothballs. Believe me when I say there would have been no P-51B models at Roswel in active service.
