Is it possible that there are licensed Futurama VCDs out there, no aniVCD, with a full-color cover? There is a lot of licensed material published on VCDs that is not available on DVD, like the Star Wars trilogy.
A Video Compact Disc. It's comparable with a DVD, you can even burn a movie on a regular CD in VCD-format and then watch it on your DVD-Player, but the picture quality of a VCD is much worse.
Anyway, here's the rest of the definition: http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,289893,sid9_gci507081,00.html
but i doubt we will see official futurama vcds the rest of the world knows they are crap but you can t beat the price and copyability (at least copys wont get any worse)
but i would never compare them to video tape recording on ep is most of the time better quality
Shame on you Mike! Star Wars is legitmitaly published on VCD in other countries. Search the net and you probably find some relevant links, like this one: http://wyith.ch/home/digital-views.net/starwarsvcd.htm

Looks pretty legitimate to me, for a couple reasons: 1) I do not recognize the graphics from anywhere else, so they are probably custom made for the VCDs 2) If you look at the details for each volume, you can see the Fox logo in the lower right hand corner fo each one. If they were illegal and someone made the graphic, they probably would not bother with that. (see here for example: http://www.allvcds.com/viewproduct.asp/productid=3500) 3) The second site specifically says "Buy 100% Original (Licensed) VCD Movies " [i am holding breath waiting for someone to ask me if I believe everything I read on the net]. The first site also mentions in the FAQ they only sell licensed VCDs from Asian distributors. 4) The two sites have the same main graphic for apparently the same VCD. If they were illegal, they must at least get them from the same source.
I wonder how the quality is. Has anyone bought them?

Your're right - I think its the same graphic cut differently for the different size media. That's a further indication that the VCDs probably ARE legitimate.
Same here. Unless the DVDs come out before that non-critical mark gets hit....
Prove it! The ones on Amazon.de are most certainly NOT illegal. The ones released on VCD in Malayasia, that have suspiciously similar packaging, are very likely also LEGAL. The ones that chumps advertise on eBay in several different formats to view ont he PC are, yes, ILLEGAL.
Fox has never announced the release of Futurama episodes in ANY format, period. Don't you think it would be in their best interest to do so? Until they make such an announcement, everything out there should be considered illegal.

Maybe they announced it in Germany and Malaysia?
Because Amazon is a large well-respected company that seeks to comply with local and international copyright law. They even stopped selling region-code 1 movies on DVD in Germany to make the movie companies happy - and it is not illegal to sell region 1 movies in Europe. I don't think Amazon would sell illegal copies of Futurma, either.
Do you expect Fox to send you a personal letter everytime they fart in another country?
Prove it is legal for my local tv station to air Futurama reruns. How can you PROVE anything?

Where? Do you have some master list of general announcements archived from Fox? And even they do not make a general announcement, does that not mean they haven't released something. So where would one even find an announcement that states that Futurama is being sold in Germany and Malaysia? Did they even make an announcement that they would translate and air Futurama in Germany? If so, where?
You're right, I can't prove anything. I never said I could, either. But I certainly wouldn't base my opinion solely on not knowing of a announcement by Fox.
Here, maybe this will satisy you: http://www2.mediantis.de/servlet/DigiTrade/7b877210cae67c05dc9cfe629f8328f0e ee49ad08cd97354ab1b8b92d46e254c/video/advise/articleview.html?artID=1965159 This was linked from Pro7's website, the german channel that airs Futurama. Of course, I can't PROVE that Pro 7 airs Futurama legally. Any maybe they even link to online stores that sell illegal stuff. I can't prove they don't! After all, I don't know of any Fox announcements saying they are legit.
Wow , Luther! You really seem to want to fight today. I didn't bring up this whole "prove it" issue so can we just relax, please.
I believe Fox would have a archive of press releases. Try there. In my experience with Futurama, I have never heard or read anything that talks about legal released versions of the episodes. Until I do, I'm going to assume that they are not legal
VHS is the dominate format in Germany, although DVD is picking up as in the US. the VCDs are available from asian distributors, where VCD is dominant format. The VHS tapes in Germany are in German and the VCDs in Asia are in english. The packaging and content of the German VHS tapes and the asian VCDs are similar. The VCDs are apparently licensed through asian distributors.
Which site do you mean? The VCD links were at the start of the thread, posted by someone else. One of the VCD sites was allvcds.com. If your newsserver has good retention, see if you can get the messages at the start of the thread. Try this http://www.allvcds.com/search.asp?Keygroup=Titles&keywords=Futurama. Here is another: http://www.getvcds.com/vcd/search.shtml?field=title&searchtext=futurama&type =movie Note the bottom: "All Video on VCD are original and copyrighted Video CD Movies. All Original VCD! We do not sell illegal vcd, please do not enquire about them." Anyway I sent an email asking AllVCD about the Futurama VCDs. They said that the distributor is "Wawasan Videovan" and they license from Fox. I didn't find much on the internet about Wawasan Videovan, other than some contest to win a VCD where employees of both Fox and Wawasan Videovan were excluded from entering; which implies some relationship between the two.
There is enough evidence for me that the german VHS tapes and the asian VCDs are most likely legit. I'm thinking about ordering the VCDs- I am curious how the quality is of production VCDs versus the 220Mb mpegs that float around the net.

When I looked at the sight the VCDs were listed as "PAL" format. This is the video format for British (and some other European countries) TVs. It is the wrong format for American TVs which are NTSC.
If you are not in a PAL country, check the documentation on your DVD (or VCD) player to see if they can convert as they play. Keep in mind that even if they do convert them, there will be some loss of quality during the conversion process. If you plan to play them on your computer, it doesn't matter which format they are in.
I'm not a TV expert, but this is my understanding. PAL is 25 frames per second, matching 50HZ current in England etc. NTSC is 30 frames per second matching the 60HZ American current. To make up for the loss of 5 FPS, PAL reverses the phase of every other line to improve picture quality (PAL = Phase Alternate Lines). To convert, the missing frames must be interpolated, and the format must be changed.
I have an Apex-703 which will play NTSC and PAL and output to either NTSC or PAL, independently. (Lucky me). But you're right, many people in the US might not be able to play them on their DVD players. At least they are in English.
By the way, the VHS tapes are legal and are not due for another month. Fox has made an announcement regarding these months ago. I still have yet to find anything on the Asian VCDs.
They are 13 episodes on 6 CDs, which averages 2-3 eps per CD. In any case, I believe the resolution and bitrate for VCD are standard and fixed. Since they might be created directly from a master by profesionals, one might assume they are of higher quality than what is found on the net.
The episodes included are all 9 from the season 1 (Volumes 1 & 2, four cds) and the first four episodes from Season 2 (volume 3, 2 CDs). Note: That it is also the entire 1st production run (1ACV01 - 1ACV13).
I heard the DVDs have commentary on each episode- maybe they will even include the Xmas episode that was cancelled. I am curious though if they will release the first season or the first production run in January (9 vs. 13 eps).
That's right. VCD has a strictly set bitrate, resolution, and fps, just varying by the TV standard. PAL VCD is MPEG-1, 352x288, 25 fps, 1150 kbit/s. NTSC VCD is MPEG-1, 324x240, 29.97 fps, 1150 kbit/s
Maybe there will be also a little bonus material on the VCDs with only 2 eps.
