damnit,

I haven't the slightest clue how long GFR and CC stayed around, but how long do they have to be the hot new band before you're satisfied? As embarrassing as he is, Vanilla Ice was not a one-hit wonder. These days, EVERY SINGLE NEW GROUP manufactures one quirky hit song, and then they're obsolete. Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Orgy are practically ready for the Hall of Fame with two hits each, and I guarantee that they'll both be around for at least another six months. In the world today, that is a damn long shelf life. If you're looking for another Beatles, you're not going to find them.

Sunshine ~~~{~~~{~~@ I've never been frightened Of being enlightened But some people go too far -BNL

In article ,

There were plenty of bands that only had one hit in the 60's 70's and 80's. But there were also bands that managed to put out whole albums full of hits. If every single new group these days only has one song, and then they're gone, then the only conclusion is that every single new group sucks.

Or that society has been trained to latch onto something, saturate themselves with it, and then get bored by the time the next single comes out. It's not just the band that makes something a hit, the audience has their part in it, too. And today's audience is composed of attentionless trendoids.

There was once a book out on "one-hit wonders", but they only used some top-40 chart for their reference guide, so therefore, by definition, artists like Jimi Hendrix qualified as "one-hit wonders"... I am highly suspicious of the terminology, myself!

Me too. To call Hendrix a "one hit wonder" is a travesty. Regardless of how high up the charts his songs have, or haven't, travelled, his music is widely known.

By one-hit-wonder, I'm thinking more along the lines of "Rock On" by David Essex, or even "Children of the Sun" by Billy Thorpe.

That's just the one-dimensional way of looking at it so people can have an objective way of listing out OHW lists. I mean, according to that way, Falco isn't a one-hit wonder because he hit #17 with "Vienna Calling"-- but seriously, does anyone remember anything he made besides "Rock Me Amadeus"? Not to disgrace the dead, of course... But still, when you turn the term "one-hit wonder" into a technical thing based on Top 40 performance, you're destroying the normal meaning of the term, i.e. "flash in the pan."

OK! THAT IS IT! I'm so incredibly sorry I started this stoopid subject and I was so incredibly stoopid to keep it going and you all should be feeling great about it. I am so sick of it! Just stop! El Barto (This is my new email)

That depends on the age of the stranger you walk up to. Just yesterday, I heard a DJ talking about how GFR doesn't get the respect it deserves and that he was going to make it his project to get GFR the recognition they deserve. He had a bunch of callers call in and talk about how great the band is and some of them even had contact numbers for the band members.

Now if you ask a bunch of teeny boppers, of course they are not going to care about Grand Funk.

DaveSunshinealt.tv.futurama

It was extrememly effective, and shouldn't have required an explanation, but since *you* seem to require one, here goes:

First you implied that the people who couldn't name their favorite "Backstreet Boy" were confined to a very select group. Elderly Hungarian aristocrats, I believe?

Then I mentioned that the group that could not name a "Backstreet Boy" was much much larger than the group you had mentioned.

You somehow implied this to mean that I thought teenaged girls are 'horribly ignorant' because they're not familiar with older music.

See? Poor logic.

My post said that we should just accept that yes, I think you're a moron, AND that you think I'm whatever you think of me. I even left a blank space for you to fill in. Just because we're not bitching at each other anymore [for the good of the group at large], that's no reason that we should pretend we like each other. Go ahead, just say "I think you are a _____ and I recognize that you think I'm a moron, and these two things aren't going to change, so let's call the whole thing off." Go nuts. 'Cause I think you're a moron, so anything you say sure isn't going to bother me, but you think I'm a _____, so I can't imagine that my calling you a moron hurts your feelings too much. It's just one last chance to air your feelings regarding the other person.

WAIT! WAIT! Don't let this DIE! (I came in on the middle of this flame-war...anybody got the Cliff Notes?)

Hey, who can name someone in Beethoven's band? How about one of his violinists?

Who first used a bone for percussive instrumentation?

Why go Futurama when we can bicker Pastrama?

(Suck-Diddly-Ick?? wasn't he that disgusting, crawdad eatin' bluesman from New Orleans?)

facetiously yours, menzies

Hey, lay off. 14-year-old kids need their idols just like everyone else.

Hey, Bizkit2415. I was joking, but hey . . . I guess now's as good a time as any to point out some things:

1. The "rise" of Limp Bizkit was fueled by payola (translation for the historically ignorant: bribery in the media) and nothing more. I hate Rolling Stone as much as the next guy with any sense, but they nevertheless pointed this out in an article a year or two ago, as your beloved Bizkit was just on the rise. Now, I'm not just talking corporate clout when I say "bribery." I mean a good-old-fashion briefcase-full-of-dollars.

2. I hate to be snooty, but calling me a "dipshit" and a "dumbass" doesn't reflect well on you. Feel free to ignore that advice because "the man" tells you the same thing, but consider this advice-- the more eloquent you are, the better you can compete with authority. Don't take that as patronizing; I'm fifteen.

3. If bands like Blink 182 or Limp Bizkit get no respect, it's probably because if they *DO* have something to say that isn't stupid (doubtful), they sure don't know how to tell it to us in a way that isn't stupid. It's not that I don't respect punk and metal, and it's not that I'm not with the times (as frustrating as they are, often). I like Bad Religion and Tool quite a lot, for example, but Blink 182 and Limp Bizkit are two of the most unoriginal, dumbed down punk and metal bands in the world today.

4. Your online name *does* make an impression on people. "Bizkit" makes you look like a teenybopper trying to be hardcore, and the "2415" clues us in on the fact that you're not exactly the first or only teenybopper to try and go hardcore. So once again it makes you look like the archtypical suburban stoner kid, just like basically everything you wrote. But maybe all you care about is being accepted by the 2500 other "Bizkit" fans on AOL-- in which case I say go ahead, stop wasting your time here. Otherwise, maybe you should think of an original name, and stop being literally a number.

5. Notice how I don't call *you* a "dumbass" for not listening to what I do? Notice how I don't say you're a "dipshit" because you've never heard of Six By Seven, Mercury Rev, Labradford, Sloan, or the Olivia Tremor Control? Believe me, "Bizkit," I've heard of your bands. I doubt you've ever heard of mine, nor would you care to. Now who's closed-minded and clueless?

6. I bet you didn't read through that whole thing. That's your loss; I *loved* writing it. Don't flatter yourself by thinking you pissed me off so badly; you merely gave me a chance to work on my rhetoric. Ta!
