Anthology of Interest I Question

Last night they played the "Anthology of Interest I" episode, which I hadn't seen before. Fry's "what if" was, what if Bender was 500 ft. tall. During this bit, Zoidberg was also made huge and they had a Godzilla-type battle throughout the city of New New York. They were shown smashing the Chase Manhattan building, falling on the Empire State Building, etc.

Notably missing was any reference to the World Trade Center. I doubt this episode was made after 9/11, so it would be odd that it was not in this bit.

Does anyone know, was the WTC in the original airing, and then they edited it out later out of some sort of sensitivity?

I don't think so. Even in the brief time that the show was in old New York, they didn't really show much of the skyline. It was mostly street level shots. And in the pilot, when Fry and Bender go down to the remains of old New York, the only building remnant I recognized was the top of the Chrysler building.

IIRC, I've never seen the WTC referenced or shown in any episode of Futurama- and Anthology I first aired in 2000. And the bulk of Futurama's 70-odd episodes were produced before 9/11.

But the producers like to blur the lines of which landmarks of 20th Century "Old New York" survived to 31st Century "New New York". The ESB was shown toppled in Fry's underground journeys to Old New York ("Space Pilot 3000, Luck of the Fryish") Plus you have to remember it was a "What if" episode. BTW, it was Bender's wish to be made 500ft tall, not Fry's. Fry's wish was what if he had never come to the future.

The WTC was a rather boring building before 9/11 (ignoring that 1994 thing). When listing New York landmarks, I would likely not have even remembered it. Since Futurama's setting is chosen for aethetic reasons, the fact that it did not make it in is unsurprising.

It is appears in a lot of live-action stuff -- Newsradio, Gangs of New York, etc. -- because it was hard to take a shot of Manhattan without including it, not because it was supposed to be the centerpiece that it is from our perspective.

It actually has appeared. Some episodes like "Time Keeps on Slippin" (watch near the beginning) and "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid" (watch when the brains first start "zapping" buildings) feature "modernized" versions of them. Like the ones still standing at the time of the creation of those episodes, the futuristic ones are very tall and the same length, and one has an antenae thing on the top. Also, in at least one episode where we see "Old New York" (Luck of the Fryrish being one, I think) you can see the original (or, at this point, perhaps rebuilt) towers, but only in partial form. Both towers seemed to have the upper halves chopped off to make room for the "ground" of New New York.
