Leela - Leila?

I just rewatched some RealVideos from Futurama presskit which I can't remeber where and when I downloaded and one detail attracted my attention. On original Matt Groening's sketch of Leela her name is spelled "Leila". That reminded me that in the "Space Pilot 3000" captions it was also "Leila". How come it became Leela afterwards (In "Amazon Women in The Mood" Zapp definitely spells it L-E-E-L-A in his "song"). Anyone got any insights? Miscommunication in the staff, I presume.

Well, the only thing I can think of is that people reading the printed version of "Leila" might interperet it as "lay-lah", so they might have opted for the more phoenetic spelling
