But the topic also reminds me of a cute anecdote. A friend of a friend of mine -- yes, I have friends, despite being an obsessive fanboy -- runs a meat packing operation in the city. During the blackout, she was confident that her freezers would stay cold enough than the meat wouldn't be spoiled so long as she kept them all shut. Everything would have gone smoothly, except that health inspectors kept coming around and opening each freezer to check the temperature. After the fourth visit she finally had to yell, "Hey, just stop it!" to keep them from ruining her entire inventory. Fortunately, it worked.
For what it's worth, this may be yet another angle on the Fry situation: if no one opened the freezer chamber, he could probably last through a few brief blackouts...provided they were of short duration and didn't occur too closely together.
