I would have put down Jedi if they'd made it clear that there was a religious holiday that had to be observed - say first two weeks in August.

Should UK military forces, for example, change their policies on prayer, diet, chaplaincy etc. to try to recruit enough "Jedi Knights" into our understrength military to make the composition of our forces reflect the population they defend...?

I'm an American, so take this with a grain of salt... but it seems silly on the face of it to try to engineer the military to be a statistical duplicate of the general populace.
In our country, in theory at least, military chaplains must be sensitive to all religious viewpoints, regardless of their own; the military neither sanctions nor inhibits prayer; and religious dietary issues are handled on a case by case basis.
I view the "Jedi Knight" thing as a sort of protest of government monitoring and tallying religious preference and participation in society. Imho, what business is it of theirs? :-)
(FWIW, I find the Jedi Knight thing humorous, but I wouldn't put it on a census form).

Where does it say Jedis are atheists in the Star Wars universe? Wouldn't defying all laws of gravity, able to do mind control, show up as a ghost after you die, etc... due to some mystical "force" be proof there IS a higher power?
Isn't the Force defined as "an energy force that binds all living beings together"? Isn't that a "higher power"? (remember, the Force is NOT the mitocondrians (sp) in the blood. The mitocondrians (sp) are just a measurement of how much the being is attuned to the Force)
I don't know, being able to communicate with a dead friend/relative is pretty much proof there would be a "higher power".

I have come to the conclusion that the Jedi Kinights are in fact a cult. Look at the information. They require blind loyality to the leaders. They control all aspects of llife, including those which should be private. They pull children away from their parents and subject them to brainwashing techniques. Is it any wonder that Annakin Skywalker goes bonkers and becomes Darth Vader?

Based on this, Jedi is the third most popular religion in Brighton and Hove behind Christian and Muslim. The Statistics office are saying the whole Jedi thing is good because (adopt civil servant voice) "Whatever its motive, the Jedi campaign may have worked in favour of the Census exercise. Census agencies worldwide report difficulties encouraging those in their late teens and twenties to complete their forms". But youse are right, the Statistics office have lumped Jedi Knight in with agnostics, atheists and heathens - ie. those with no religion. I would just love it is somebody kicked up a fuss saying that this was an insult to their religious belief, the govt are so policitially correct and fearful of upsetting any minority, they may have to do something - so c'mon Brighton and Hove - demand recognition of your belief - you're being discriminated against! You could probably get a lottery grant to build a church!
