Zapp's singing is done in the style for ads for priceline.com. These ads feature spokesperson (and main Zapp spoof target) William Shatner singing a song while promoting an online site that helps people find the best prices for airlines, hotels, and groceries. Obviously, if you can't stand Shatner's cover of the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", then it's best to stay away from these ads.

The song that Zapp sings a la Shatner is Lola, a tune by the Kinks. What Zapp fails to realizes when singing this song is its message: the title person in the song is really a man who dresses up like a girl. While on the sci-fi subject, one of "Weird Al" Yankovic's best parodies (according to his fans) is a Lola spoof about the Empire Strikes Back, more specifically Luke's encounter with Yoda.

Actually, the song was originally written (by Jim Steinman) for Bonnie Tyler, who sang the first and most familiar version in 1983. If Air Supply ever recorded the song it's news to me.

(There is a file labeled "Air Supply - Total Eclipse of the Heart" floating around Napster, but it seems to be mislabeled, as it sounds nothing like them.)

Also, the karaoke song Morbo sings is "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc., which was a dance hit in late 1979 and early 1980.

Also, Zapp sings the original lyric, "tastes like Coca-Cola." The Kinks' record label, Reprise, had the band change the words to "cherry cola," because BBC Radio had a ban on songs used as advertising , and would not have played the "Coca-Cola" version. The "cherry cola" take is the most familiar version of "Lola." (The BBC folks must have missed the transvestite theme, which would have probably have gotten it banned regardless.)

There has been a really awful dance remix about a year ago, too.

The Kinks' rigorously deny that this song has anything to do with transvestites. I'm inclined to believe them since they wrote it and performed it. The reason most people think Lola is a man is because of the line: "... I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola." This line does not mean Lola is also a man. It means Lola is also glad that the singer is a man.

What about the line "Girls will be boys and boys will be girls"?

Or "Well I'm not dumb, but I can't understand why she walked like a woman but talked like a man"?

TMBG said in their official "Factory Showroom" overview on the Elektra website that S-E-X-X-Y was their first ode to "getting it on." The specific details of the song are a bit sketchy, though - you never know with the Johns.

I think that it's pretty obvious that the Kinks intended "Lola" to sound like it was about a transvestite but have a clear double meaning, just so they could be funny and deny it in interviews.

I read the theory somewhere that it was about someone with both male and female chromosomes, hence the XX and XY letter combinations in SEXXY. I think that they really don't put as much thought into writing their songs as people do interpereting them.

The next line is "it's a mixed up, jumbled up, shook up world except for Lola." Or something like that. Anyway, if you want to put a crossdressing theme in, the singer here is saying that Lola is the only one NOT crossdressing.

Could be she liked football? Or maybe used a lot of profanity?

Really, this has been discussed back and forth a million times. Check deja if you don't believe me. I've actually heard interviews where they deny it means transvestitism.

Yeah, right, just like the Beatles deny "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about tripping out on LSD.

A little Side note to this. Has anyone noticed the sign in the intro next to the tube system that used to say "3-D Rules" In FAL-1. Now says something diffrent. But it's just to small to make it out on my tape. Anyone with the into, check it out and see if you can make anything of it.

Goof? Dr. Zoidberg's molted shell still has the eyeballs in place. (And if he's walking around in a towel, why is the shell at the meeting/dinner table instead of the bathroom or wherever he keeps his towels?)

Here's an old joke from which the writers surely found inspiration:

Three guys get stranded in a jungle in a plane crash. As they try to find help, they're captured by some mean-looking natives. The natives take the men to their village and tie them up. The leader of the tribe indicates to the men that they have two choices for tresspassing: death, or Unga Bunga. The first guy says, "I don't wanna die," so the chief yells, "UNGA BUNGA!" and 20 large natives tie him down and sodomize him. The second guy, after watching the gruesome spectacle, decides that it is better than death, so he chooses Unga Bunga. The third guy believes Unga Bunga is worse than death, so he chooses death.

The chief yells, "DEATH! ...BY UNGA BUNGA!"

Reminds me of when I was drawing Polly Phemus (http://showcase.netins.net/web/flexia/index1.html) back in the '80s, I'd draw the eye in last because, otherwise, having *that* staring up at me from paper sometimes creeped me out. Usually the eye(s) are what a cartoonist or illustrator will draw first on a person's face.

So why can't women dunk?

BTW- You're making me think of Iowa high school girl's basketball. Six girls on the court and a stupid double dribble rule that end up with a technical foul every minute or two. I've been avoiding high school sports since nineteen-seventy-something, so I'm not sure if they still do that.
