Okay, I've heard the word a few times. Then the intro of Norm a couple weeks ago had this weird Pokemon opening to it that I just couldn't understand. What the hell is a Pokemon?

What I've put together: They're a cross between the PowerRangers, Gigapets, and Pogs. They live in little balls which you throw at each other to activate. Then they battle it out, but they have to be trained.

Pretty much. Pokemon is short for "pocket monster" (no crude comments, please). It is an animated Japanese anime cartoon on the WB TV network. Wizards of the Coast (those fine people who bring you Magic: The Gathering) produces the Pokemon trading card game, which has caused no end of controversy among parents, teachers, and others. Some cards are worth $50 or more due to their rarity and power in the game (Charizard the dragon is a prime example). You have to "pay to play" by buying packs of cards. The gambling aspect comes from the fact that you may get a $50.00 card in $3.00 booster pack, which you can sell for more money to buy more cards, etc....

The cartoon is really cute, and appeals to boys and girls up to pre-teen age.

Actually, since my 5 year old has been into it, I've started to become quite the fan and I'm in my 30's. Its a lot of fun and definately amusing. Way better than the usual crap that passes for children's programming. Unfortunately the marketing is obscene. My son wants me to paint the Honda Pikachu yellow. Where will it end?

Huh? You have GOT to pay more attention to The Simpsons. It's chock full of naughty stuff. Do you think Smithers puts up with Monty Burn's crap because he is just a loyal employee? If fact I make it a goal to spot the gay subtext bit in each episode.

Yes, but there's a lot of difference between the subtle stuff on the Simpsons and anything on the usual sitcom dreck. A line like "hey, how many women did you have sex with last week? Ha! (insert formula insult here)" probably wouldn't pop up on The Simpsons.
