1ACV07: Honey, I Drank The Emperor

Review by Haynes Lee {hl}, [email]

TV GUIDE SYPNOSIS (Canadian TV Guide): Fry's thirst gets him into hot water when he delivers a package inhabited by liquid aliens and accidently drinks their ruler, making himself the planet's new leader.

REVIEW: the first half was good but the second half was hit and miss.

GRADEE: B-

DYN: - Robowash still takes quarters? - Bender has a shiny metal butt after Robowash? - Bender getting his jollies from the buffers? - a head shop in the 20th century sells drug paraphenelia? - emperor's bottle shaped like a Coke bottle? - liquid planet has British parliamentary system? - political satirist is more like 1970s Improv? (not at all like Mark Russell)

CULTURAL REFERENCES:

"My Three Sons": sounds like "My Three Suns"

"Carwash": 1970s movie taking place in a carwash. Theme song similar.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Odo and the Founders live in a liquid state and refer humanoids as "solids".

James Cameron's "The Abyss (1989)": the first movie to using "morphing" for liquid entities. It won an Oscar for Visual Effects. James Cameron used the same effects later for "Terminator 2".

Grasshopper and the ant: parable about carefree grasshopper and working ant.

Star Trek: Neutral Zone.

20th CENTURY TECHNOLOGY: - robowash similar to carwash - cast iron cookware to fight off meal ingredients - vending machine used to dispense crack cocaine - liquid aliens have juice-inator

WHEN ALIENS ATTACK(tm): - Meptunian slug attacks cook - butcher shop selling human meat - liquid beings have a resurrection against Fry

FOLKLORE:

Dutch folklore has a little boy preventing a flood by sticking his finger in the leaking dike.

Classic false urban legend about newbie in the Big City waking up finding that various orgrans have been removed from his body.

There is a Neutral Zone today. It's near Saudi Arabia. See http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_304.html

Well, actually, though the rights to Droopy may currently belong to Hanna Barbera, Droopy first appeared in MGM shorts, which I do not beleive where associated with Hanna Barbera in any way. MGM did employ Hanna Barbera to make their Tom & Jerry shorts, however. Btw, for the books, Droopy's first appearence was in "Dumb Hounded" tracking down the famous wolf in a prison outfit and popping up wherever the wolf went.

Other DYNs: ... Bender didn't try reclaiming his quarter? (Or did he? I forget.) ... Amy lost her shoes running up the stairs to the throne room? (She was barefoot when she came in) ... nevertheless, she had her shoes back later in the scene? ... if you listen to Amy closely after Bender puts his hand over her mouth, you can hear a muffled "Oh!" when she finally gets his plan? [Heh, maybe I should borrow a page from Don Del Grande and start an "Amy Alert" section]

This also reminded me of the Levis commercial where the guy drives through the carwash in his AMC Levis-edition Gremlin, with the windows down. They used the same music, and there was a scene where the driver selected the type of wash he wanted from a button board, as Bender did.

Perhaps most importantly, I think we saw our first glimpse of the "hard" alphabet. When Fry delivers the package to the throne room, he spots the bottle and looks at it for a second or two. On the pillar in the background, we see signs in various "foreign" languages. One of these signs had red glyphs on it that were (a) clearer than the lettering on the other signs, as if we were intended to notice it, and (b) not a part of the alphabet we see in the "TV Guide" ciphers.

This was not the absolute first glimpse. The "hard" alphabet was seen on the sarcophagus of the Teryaki-style alien mummy, but there was no way to decode it until now. Assuming that the signs say the same thing in each language, we have they key for the letters D, E, H, I, K, M, N, O, P, R, and T.

Leela seems to have a rather large wardrobe. She's got the green tank top, and then she's got the white tank top, and maybe some evening wear stashed away somewhere for when she actually gets a date.

Love that jacket she has, even if it does tend to spontaneously come unbuckled while holding certain books.

Brain is voiced by Maurice LaMarche, who also does Orson Welles, as well as many other animated characters. He's rather ubiquitous, really.

I wouldn't refer to Jeremy Hawke from "The Critic" as either eerie or a genius, but it does seem like most of Maurice's characters are like that.

He also played an archeology professor on one episode of "King of the Hill," and that may have been as close to his real voice as we'll ever hear on a cartoon!

Yeah, that's Maurice Lamarche.

It also sounded like a voice artist I've heard on Dexter on CN.

cristofer m. benway.com rfo.net >>>>>>>|<<<<<<<<

Well spotted! That voice was Maurice LaMarche...he does the Brain in a very Orson Wells-sounding voice, and used a very similar voice for that high priest.

That's also LaMarche as one of Mom's sons, the "lead" son who sounds like Vincent Price.

LaMarche also did Orson Wells' voice in the movie "Ed Wood," but he wasn't the look-alike that you see on screen. There was an entire episode of Pinky and the Brain based on a famous "outtake" reel from a recording session with Orson Wells in which he freaks out because a director is telling him to accentuate an impossible syllable...."The correct reading is the one I'm giving it!!!"

I didn't see the episode of The Critic you mentioned, but I'm sure that was LaMarche, too.

How long before the airing do they know who is sponsoring them? I am sure Groening did not demand that a Gatoraide (sp?) commercial be aired at this time. So then it must have been there all along and Groening either knew about it at production time (unlikely) or manipulated the timing of it to be aired after that scene.

Shouldn't that be "insurrection" or "revolution"? I don't recall any coming back from the dead in that episode.
