Okay, you're okay with the fact that they evolved into mermaids, and that it didn't take millions of years, but you want to know how they avoiding drowning long enough to do so? Here's the answer: The chamber of commerce immediately distributed those underwater breathers to everyone. Having a city full of drowning victims is bad for commerce (just in case you didn't know). Soon after, they got Donovan to film the promotional video, which explains why he still had legs in the video (He wasn't a merman, and wasn't a head in a jar). Mystery solved! ;)

In the 2nd season, and for a season finale? Nahh. My hopes are pointed in exactly the opposite direction. It sounds like this will be Futurama's version of The Simpsons Halloween specials, an "anthology" of three short stories. It should be a real treat, in light of the sci-fi/horror comic book tradition of anthology stories.

Speaking of special episodes, Futurama will end the season with 29 episodes in the can. They put out 20 this season, so assuming they do 20 or 21 episodes in season 3, they are perfectly lined up to make the 50th anniversary episode either the 3rd season finale or the 4th season premiere.

If you're interested in making a bet, I'm expecting this to be a triptych style story in the Treehouse of Horror, Creepshow, 50s sci-fi/horror comic tradition. It's the season finale after all, so I expect a big effort, not a mere clipshow.

Well, 'anthology' does have kind of a past tense connotation to it in a way, probably because it is often used to describe reprint volumes of literary work, where "best of" style selections are made. But it is just as valid to describe brand new collections of works, and you can buy a lot of "anthologies" of new short stories or poetry right now. The dictionary definition doesn't make any mention of whether works in an anthology must be new or old:
