Showing age here....
I remember when I was kid I would tie a string onto the volume knob of the TV (In those days we had no remotes, and if you pulled the volume it would turn on the TV) and the other end to the bed post, that way when I woke up Saturday morning, I could pull the string and watch cartoons without getting out of the bed.
Then I had to put a string on a suction cup dart, so I could shoot the dart at the volume to turn it off, and if I missed I could pull the string with the dart back to my bed.
I never did find out how to turn channels though.
