website futurama : too much advertissment

Hello ! There's a lot of futurama sites on the net but i think that it's really navrous to see that they have all many advrtissment on every pages !!! The webmaster do their site for passion or for business ??? Greg

Well, I think it's pretty simple: putting a site on the internet is NOT free. Hence, webmasters will put ads on their page so that they can earn some money to pay for the site.

Yep, CGEF was close to being shut down more than once cause of lack of money. It's not like they(including all other pages) buy a new Porsche every week. I guess most are lucky if they get the server costs paid using that ad money.

True, but only a last resort. You are all dependend on your hoster then. Remeber Sweeetnet? Most Pages used to be hosted there. They offered free hosting if your page has a banner of theirs on every page (plus some ga- rantied minimum views a day). After that, CNET cut their contract with Stomped, who hosted Sweeetnet. So Sweeet was without ads to sell and had to dump all pages. With your own ads, you are responsible for that and dont relay on others.

Does $10 include like 100GB traffic a month? If it says "unlimited" traf fic, then it doesnt.

How much webspace could that be ? 20mb ? 100mb ? ...

None of the webmasters of the current fan pages makes any money as far as i know. Even _if_ the would make some money, do you really think that would make a decent hourly compensation for all the work included?

True, I have the "low-usage" account, where I use their dialup for less than 10 hours per month--that's because I use an outside dialup, and don't use theirs at all...

In addition to Usenet access, I get:

I don't think you proposed putting a bigger fanpage on such an account, but just to show the proportions:

lovely :) Thats 1/5th of CGEF's message board P.E.E.L. and P.E.E.L. is really one of the smallest sections there and not getting any smaller over time.

That's about what CGEF's HTTP alone consumes in 2 hours(or: 0.27% of their HTTP traffic). Some smaller "MsWord-Save as-HTML" pages could sur- vive withthat, but even they need way more than 10mb diskspace. And free "unlimited" traffic providers normally kick you or use a traffic-shaper once you have success/traffic.

Then let me tell you: no ;-)

The Ad market is really down for some time now. Taking the numbers above into account: no such thing as money to make with Futurama Fan Pages.

Y'see, it's all in what you wish to put up there. I've got some personal photographs and a batch of fanfic that I've written. I'm not trying to get dozens of hits--I just want a place where people who know what I've got can come look at it. Therefore, it's worth the $7 per month I pay for it, and there's no need for advertising on my page. If I felt like posting gobs of animated video and soundfiles, I couldn't do it, unless I purchased a lot more space, or worked with a different company that made extra revenue through advertising space. It's all relative...

True, I mean look at all the commercials they stuff in among an episode of Futurama on TV.

But banners ARE nescessary if you have to pay for it - as Futurama sites tends to be well-visited. And a site with those requirements to machinery and connection is gonna cost ya.

So I think it's fair, as long as they don't spawn banner-windows like they do on www.killbots.com - now THAT's bugging!
