Yeah, I noticed that too. Weird.
I think it's quite ironic (and sad) that 'Jesus' is considered offensive enough to be removed, while 'hell', 'damn', and 'bastard' survive just fine. Puzzling.

I'm just disappointed that CN has ended their streak of uncensored, uncut episodes. Why censor something as minor as that? And why do it after the episode originally aired unedited at the 7:00 PM timeslot on FOX?
I think Adult Swim comes with enough disclaimers and is on late enough at night such that no censoring of any kind is warranted. I hope this isn't the beginning of a trend.
On or about Fri, 14 Feb 2003 16:03:50 GMT, RDK made the sensational claim that:
I'm hoping it was just an incredibly coincidental flub myself.
I doubt it. They have a bad history with that word. Like when they were going to air the short film "Rejected"...
"well, have been hearing troubling reports from the cartoon network, currently sitting on rejected's american television premiere because of new problems with the network censors standards and practices people. they were all ready to go and air it uncut and gutsy and throw caution to the wind to impress everyone with their new adult programming at first, but now they have problems with the fact that one of the characters says "sweet jesus". no problems with the blood and violence, but apparently "jesus" is a dirty word now, which i was not aware of. let's hope this silliness clears up soon and the film gets to air, because everyone knows we will yank it entirely before even thinking of editing anything." -Don Hertzfeldt (the creator)
And it never made the airwaves. The end.

Wouldn't want to offend that subset of Christians who whine at the least perceived offense, of course.
My guess is some big-wig at CN is some devout Catholic with no sense of humor. It's just a guess though...

You don't have to be that devout to find something like that offensive. It is one of the commandments to not take the lord's name in vain.
Not that I care, being a godless heathen.
And it's more likely that whenever someone on TV says "God Damned" or "Jesus Christ" they get lots of calls and letters and that's why they take it out.
I had a teacher in high school who would go ballistic if any of her students said "Jesus Christ".
That makes it one of *their* commandments, not *the* commandments - I certainly don't subscribe to their worldview.

That's the problem. There's always something that somebody is going to take offense to. Where do you draw the line? If you make one group happy you piss off another.
I think they edit things like that because the people who are offended by the "J" word are more likely to protest and boycott. CN is afraid to take the chance and can't afford to lose the viewers. Unlike Fox which seems to thrive on controversial programming.
Cynically Depressed wrote:
The people most likely to boycott don't normally watch the network anyway and the disclaimer at the beginning of every episode in the block does warn them that some people may find the show's content offensive.

To which the response in this case would be, "Offensive is one thing; blasphemous is another". Isn't Cartoon Network still owned by Turner Broadcasting, as in Atlanta, as in Georgia, as in Bible Belt?

To which my response would be, "No different, only different in your mind." There is no difference between "blasphemy" and offensive. Both are opinions and no two people will always agree on what is offensive or blasphemous.
AOL-Time Warner owns the entire Turner cable empire. They do have offices in Georgia, but the people calling the shots are in New York, IIRC.
All of Turner's stations are owned by AOL-Time Warner. Besides, Turner is no bible thumping conservative.

Turner just stepped down, so he's no longer in charge anyway.
I know people that have watched shows with disclaimers, then complained about what they saw, I think a lot of the people who would protest or boycott or whatever actively try to be offended by shows.
Remember the uproar over "Married With Children" when the woman complained about what was on the show and got advertisers to pull their ads? She also sent letters with details of what was on the episodes, and they only way she could know the details is if she watched the episodes, the same episodes she was so "offended" by and didn't want to see on TV ever again.
Ken wrote:
That's the funny part. Most of those people are already crackpots. If it were really that bad, they would have complained very loudly when "The Deep South" first aired.
According to the Married with Children reunion special, they lost advertisers, but gained even more simply from the exposure the uproar generated.
Sometimes I wonder if it falls into the category of "nothing better to do".
Maybe it took them this long to get mobilized?
That's what seems to happen almost all the time, an uproar causes better ratings, free publicity and better advertisers.
I've thought that disclaimers on TV shows should be worded like a contract:
1. You've heard the warning/disclaimer, you have 10 seconds to change the channel, watching beyond that point means you waive all rights to sue, protest, boycott or otherwise complain about this program.
2. You have the ability to change the channel before and during this program if it gets to be too much for you, if you are unable to do this, please turn the TV off, if unable to do this, unplug the set, and as a last resort, pull an "Elvis" and shoot the set. If you are still unable to do all of this, please contact your local power comapny and have your power disconnected, then seek professional help, TV is the least of your problems.

And furthermore, some of those people don't interpret that commandment as applying to things like Jesus H. Fucking Christ.
It actually refers to swearing to God that the lie you are about to tell is true.
To think otherwise assumes the ancient Hebrews had some form of "Goddammit" in their language - any Hebrew scholars out there know what it might have been? (There's this Jewish girl I'm trying to impress ;)
I knew they were going to edit "sweet zombie jesus".
I watched a copy of Deep South a few weeks ago that I had taped off of Fox and when I heard that line, something told me that CN would edit it. It was a hunch.

This was the case with the hilarious cartoon short "Rejected". They didn't have problems with the graphic subject matter but did have a beef with "Sweet Jesus!" being in a word balloon.

There are supposedly 2 instances of jesus being left out - I only know of the one I saw last week (Sweet Zombie ______), but don't doubt that there is a 2nd one.
OK, it is "holy" in "Bender Gets Made." My apologies to Frank. But the thread did start out after "Deep South" in which it is "sweet."
