That along with "Brannigan's laws are like Brannigan's love--hard and fast" were tonight's two best quotes. However, I do think the Simpsons and Futurama are starting to overdo it on the gay jokes. But tonight's episode was still great, I give it an A-

That line was used already, though, I think it was on Dawson's Creek sometime in the first season. I thought it was a great show tonight; in contrast to that person saying that all of the April shows would be bad or not as good as the others.

I know I've heard the term gaydar somewhere before, and since I don't watch Dawson's Creek, maybe it is becoming a buzzword or something. For what it's worth, I also thought the show was pretty entertaining tonight which relieves me somewhat since I didn't find the 2nd or 3rd episodes to be all that good.

Dawsons Creek didn't invent Gaydar, I've heard that word back in Junior High ('86-'88) and even then it wasn't new.

"Spending warm summer days indoors, writing frightening verse, to a bucktoothed girl in Luxemberg..." Ask - The Smiths 1986 Come see my dead early 80s arcade page:

"Gay-dar" was a heavily used "concept" in the early 1980's with the beginning of the AIDs epidemic. Once thought to be only gay men who got the disease, this was the extreme religious right's idea of "punishment for their sins". AIDs allowed for them to point out gay men, simply because of a disease, thus ridding the world of those who went against their beliefs.

The search for a way to pick out gay men, has long been an obsession by straight men (and women) in an attempt to protect themselves from getting hit on (men) or avoiding men who would refuse their own attempts (women). Thus every few years a new form of "Gay-dar" arises, whether it be a disease, a color of carnation in the lapel (oscar wilde and others wore green carnations as a "secret sign" of their openminded sexuality in the early 1900's), the size of the hypothalamus (part of the brain, that some scientists thought produced the genetic basis for being gay), etc.

Obviously there is no gay-dar but apparently well in to the 31st century, society still has hang-ups over sexual orientation. Quite a nice political statement if you ask me.

i myself have heard the phrase used for years.

actually, friend keith, it is possible, whether one is "obsessed"
or not, sometimes to develop an impression about whether or not someone
is homosexual without even trying. the reason i've heard the phrase
"gadar" (which is how i've always imagined it would be spelled) is that
i have some very liberal friends who laugh about it and jokingly say
that they've developed it to a heightened degree. i've also heard some
of my gay acquaintance use similar expressions--one bi-sexual friend of
mine talks about enjoying going to "straight bars" to see if she can
spot anyone gay.
so, if there's irrationality to be found, it's to be found all over
the world (in both gay and straight populations), and i don't think it's
possible to avoid certain impressions sometimes when looking at or
interacting with certain people.

tinky winky :P

There are parts of the above that are correct, but the basic idea that gay-dar consists of outward "secret signs" is wrong. Gay-dar refers, and has always referred, to the unexplainable "sixth sense" -- the ability of [some] gay people to tell, without asking and without any secret indicators, if another person is gay. Gay-dar was acknowledged well before AIDS and well before the early 1980s. Gay-dar has nothing to do with the religious right or with anti-gay or anti-AIDS bias.

Your reference to the hypothalamus is of another ilk entirely and frankly makes *no* sense at all appearing in the same list with special-colored carnations. Someone might have checked another's carnation know if he was gay, but there's no easy way to check another's hypothalamus. Jeez.

By the way, AIDS is spelled in all capitals, *not* AIDs.

Small parts of the above are correct, but your basic, central idea that gay-dar consists of outward "secret signs" is wrong. Gay-dar refers to the unexplainable "sixth sense" -- the ability of [some] gay people to pick out OTHER gay people, without asking and without any secret flags or other outward indicators. Gay-dar was acknowledged well before AIDS and well before the early 1980s. Gay-dar has *nothing* to do with the religious right, with anti-AIDS bias, or with attempts by non-gay people to figure out if others are gay..

It is said to be an innate sense, not something that changes "every few years."

Your reference to the hypothalamus is of another ilk entirely and frankly makes noooo sense at all appearing in the same list with special-colored carnations. Even if someone indeed might once have checked another guy's carnation to know if he was gay, there's no simple, discreet way to check another guy's hypothalamus.

*HeeHee* La-Dee-DA! I've been a ROBOSEXUAL for well over 20 years. Specifically, I like MALE-form ROBOTS/Androids, so, I guess that makes me a HETEROBOSEXUAL. whatever.

When I first heard Bender say; "I've got what they call 'gaydar'.", it had me worried. I was thinking; 'Bender's GAY?? damn. I'll have to get a sex-change operation.'. But, the joke was presented in an entirely different context, using an actual RADAR type machine which has nothing to do with the sexual orientation of the one operating the machine itself. So, I won't have to change gender after all.*whew*. That's a relief! Yep, I'm still a FemBOT.
