Look at it this way. These newsgroups are far from mainstream, as are the methods people go through to get the eps downloaded. On top of that, anyone can tape the show with their VCR too. It was aired publicly for all to see. If people are scrouning around the net trying to get adless versions to download, at least it might help increase the fan-base who will also watch it live, which can only be good. As for money making the world go round - sure. But those guys get paid when the show is produced/aired regardless of whether or not a bunch of computer nerds finds ways to download the show. If they didn't care about stuff like that, why would they insert alll kinds of easter eggs and frames and alien languages just for us? Although I am sure some Fox lawyer would try and shut down anyplace where an ep could be downloaded, I don't really think its that big of a deal. On the other hand, it someone starts ripping released version from VCD or DVD and posting them, that would pose a bigger issue. Just my 2 cents, maybe they really think differently.

You are right... when you don't consider other countries. People in other countries, who download the eps (in some cases over a year before the national airing), usually don't watch the dubbed or subtitled versions on national TV. If no one watches the shows, the TV stations don't buy them and Fox loses money. Of course Fox mostly cares about the US market, but they still can lose money.

i'm in australia and on free to air tv, channel 7 showed the first series and a half or so, and then stopped. we were only a couple months or so behind the US... but as we haven't had any for ages, and some bits were modified... (ie first episode, guy walks into tube, says where he wants to go, i think the US one i have on cd said "JFK Jr Airport", the one i got on tv said "radio city music hall" in the same voice... I need to download the episodes just because they chose to stop showing them, (they were getting some of the best ratings that the shit channel 7 ever had) and because i would prefer to have them the way they were in the US, not the international version.

also the first episode seemed to be a combination of the first and third episodes there (i think third...) modified to not have opening credits in the middle... then they played episode 2 after that. (

channel 7 sucks ass, as you may be able to tell, and i can't get cable in my area, or cheap sattelite because i am fringe rural, but not rural enough to get satellite discounts, not urban enough for cable.

That change was made because JFK Jr died in a plane crash, so they figured it was really bad taste. There are no modified international versions out there, except ones in alternate languages.

My point is, if they want to make money off of home copies of the show, they should put out DVD sets in the states. I'd buy 'em.

And it's hard to make money on a show no one watches. Remember Comedy Central's early policy on bootleg South Park episodes...although I doubt Fox would be quite so enlightened, it's possible the show's producers are.

yes, they must also understand that we buy as much merchandise as we can get our hands on... its just that is certain countries its not shown (like here in Australia)

if i have never downloaded futurama, i would never hhave bought merchandise or wanted to buy the DVD or get more into the simpsons

it is money they wouldnt have gotten, plus FOX had already pyed for it anyway, the futurama team isnt losing money
